The earliest historical reference I can find to the idea of a 'victim culture' dates back to Roman emperors wittering about this new cult that rejects heroic gods like Zeus and Mars and instead worships a some guy who gave all his stuff away and got executed as a criminal.

So reckons Justin the Philosopher while appealing to the emperor Antoninus to stop killing a bunch of people, anyway.

It crops up again with a whole bunch of dickheads from Wagner to Mussolini going 'victim culture bad, hero culture good' though, so we can probably hazard a guess that moaning about 'victim culture' has been around for as long as appeals for someone to not be a fash oval office have.

There is an excellent podcast series called "Maintenance Phase."

It goes into a lot of deep dives at the science behind fad diets, health food crazes and the medical industry as a whole.

Spoiler warning, most of it all is based around junk science, racist theories or just a desire to make money off people.

It's very good.

Seconding this recommendation from the last thread. Also check out Aubrey Gordon's books.

And Michael Hobbes' other podcast If Books Could Kill is good too.

Having looked at my last post I should clarify that I'm saying "Maintenance Phase" is a good podcast. And not, that making money off people by exploiting their fears around weight gain is good.

Driest February in England since 1993 signals drought ahead, say experts
With little rain forecast for spring and reservoirs still not refilled, drought could be worse than last year

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/mar/01/driest-february-england-signals-drought-ahead-experts

quote:

Stuart Singleton-White, the head of campaigns at the Angling Trust, said the government and water companies had not yet prepared for the crisis that could be about to hit.

He said: “Strange as it may seem, it’s not over yet. The risk of returning to drought in 2023 is real. Both Cornwall and the east of England are still in drought. Many of our rivers have not properly recovered. We do not want to see a return to the number of fish deaths and fish rescues we saw last summer. With proper planning, we don’t need to.

“We need to see water companies and the Environment Agency doing more to ensure the public are kept informed, encouraged to value and save water where they can, and be aware of the impact another year of drought would have on our water environment and the wildlife that depends on it. Water companies need to get ahead of the game. They need to introduce measures to help us conserve water a lot earlier than they did in 2022. We should not wait until the crisis hits before we take action.”

With all these overlapping crises it really does feel like society is unravelling, slowly for now, probably faster in a few years.

Related, the Biosphere Collapse thread is currently enjoying a French TV show called The Collapse (l'effondrement), which I binge-watched last night. It's good, seems relatively realistic (though a little too sudden - like barely a week between "everything's fine" and "hordes of hungry rioters murdering one another across the entire country").

How much of the England in permanent water shortage is due to most of the water capacity being leaked out of antiquated infrastructure which the privatised water companies have never bothered their arse to update/fix?

It's actually the fault of private individuals for running the tap while brushing their teeth and having too many baths. Unless they have water meters in which case carry on.

It has, however, made him into a very, very smart boy with something like a university degree in Truth.
