I'm thinking of the back history of the Labour party and without researching all the details just going on half-remembered memories, the 'Westminster' party have been 'establishment men' from the start. Didn't they betray the South Wales miners back in the 1920s or did I imagine that?

(Aside: why can I smell meat pies being cooked (I never buy meat pies) and I just went out to the corridor and noone is cooking them in their flats either? I keep smelling odd things around this time of night, it seems to be phantosmia. Weird. Or what?)

Just reading more of that Miami Showband article. No wonder the establishment are so keen to prevent military from being prosecuted. What else will come out if they get in the dock?

Roy Jenkins is unquestionable the best Home Secretary of the 20th & 21st centuries, & probably of all time. He oversaw the end of flogging in prisons, the legalisation of abortion & decriminalisation of homosexuality, & introduced a bill to criminalise racial discrimination. Of course he also introduced Commonwealth Immigrants Act which was a dogshit xenophobic law, but considering the other people who have been Home Secretary? He actually made things better for people, almost unheard of as Home Secretary

Banning non-electric vehicles in 2030 probably means that the alternatives will suck for a bit, and then will get better.

Like with RoHS, the lead-free replacement solders sucked rear end, and for a few years it may have caused more harm than good through increased e-waste. But once a critical mass of the market had moved to RoHS compliance lead free soldering techniques improved to the point where you didn't see much reliability difference.

CFL lights suck too (in part due to RoHS concerns, but also in general), but it's one of the eternal liberal vs. planner debates as to whether the market would have spent anywhere near enough time developing LED lights as a CFL replacement if regulators hadn't phased out incandescents. LEDs are better than both CFLs and incandescents (for almost every purpose) but were not a mature product at the time incandescents were phased out.

Presumably given enough time and research interest and funding LEDs would have become mature tech at some point, and there's always a danger to "we must do something and this is something" type approaches, but a well considered phased approach to scrapping incandescents spurred LED development.

Of course some people aren't happy about that. They're the same people who enjoy hanging thieves and beating children apparently
https://twitter.com/JoeTwyman/status/847017907800412160

The main reason we need to keep fluorescent lights is that LEDs don't make for very good weapons in deathmatch wrestling, where as long fluorescent tubes are great.

After paying green fees, boarding school for two kids, having dinner invitations with the upscale high brow society and so on, his decent-but-not-obscene salary didn't cut it, and that was the actual reason he'd started "supplementing" it. He did really seem to be regretful and content with serving time for his crimes

What struck me was that he described circumstances that, while painfully middle class myself didn't exactly relate to directly, the stress and sense of impotence from being unable to afford the things you think you should, I did find eerily familiar--there is a dimension to relative poverty that you're always potentially vulnerable to, whatever your financial circumstances. the Labor Left tack now is alterations on the margin, like allowing onshore medical treatment in case of emergencies. Albanese is not altering the political status quo

whether this would be equally true of the post-Brexit UK political landscape is something of an open question. Unlike Australia the UK is not surrounded by countries that are not signatories to the 1951 refugee convention, so the sense of unfairness does not arise. Geographically, the UK needs the cooperation of France for meaningful enforcement and so stunts in the UK selling a message of fobbing off the problem on darkest Europe instead predictably generate problematic backlash

however, CON analysts hunting for a next trick after quotas don't really have other novel ideas

ronya triangulating on refugees is very on-brand.
