the state's case was pretty weak he probably would've walked if he hadn't succumbed to BDE and insisted on testifying

The government could place him at the scene of the crime less than 10 minutes before the murders happened and he previously lied about this fact up until the point that it was revealed that the state had evidence of his presence there. I wouldn't say it was a particularly weak case.
