The upcoming bill is called the Love Lives On Act. It's being championed by the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) and the 2022 bill (which was introduced in like November of 2022 wtf) received a letter of support from TAPS along with like 26 other VSOs. Short version is that a surviving spouse who remarries gets to keep their benefits, other than Tricare and they can get Tricare back if the marriage ends.

The argument behind it is that first responder survivor benefits generally don't go away after remarriage so service member survivor benefits shouldn't either.

I've made some documents - TAPS' one pager, their letter of support, and a draft copy of the bill available here.

I will email my Congress critters. This may not be what you want though, they always tell me "no" and vote for the opposite.

Serious question:

Does Trump have an influential advisor (or a group of them) that are Mormons?

Of the Mormons that I know, they almost universally love Trump. This idea of his seems like something they would like.

Or do I just know Mormons that are white supremacists?

Be careful. My wife watches enough of that to make me think she has a rather extensive "don't make that mistake" list.

I always thought that to be the case as well.

My wife says that all of Mexico is dangerous. Most of her family is still living in South West Mexico, two of her uncles have been kidnapped for ransom. Her family never gets specific regarding threats and/or how things went down, so I never know if it's bad security practices, luck, or they are being specifically targeted. Hopefully I will be visiting late this year, so I might get some better insight.

Yeah figured something like this would happen - Dead americans who aren't invovled in the drug biz is bad for biz. There is a certain amount of background violence that gets treated as noise by the power that be - step outside those boundaries and things start getting reshuffled and a new normal has to be found.

The fact that we continue on like this instead of simply legalizing drugs is absolutley a testament to the hyprocracy of every person involved in the drug war. The USA has 100% lost and enforcement efforts are seen as an expense instead of an actual hinderance. If we want to get rid of the cartels then legalization is probably the only avenue available.

This always gets me as well. We know that the cartels are running a modern style military/corporate "business". I wouldn't be surprised if they had fleshed out HR systems and staff at this point.

Legalizing the substances that they traffic in would change so many variables. It would likely be the most impactful action towards the cartels in the "war on drugs" other than extensive drone strikes (which would likely backfire somehow).

Donnie backed off the Tuesday thing when it became obvious he was just yelling at his teevee again. Won't see anything until any indictment is announced, if it ever is. I don't understand these "pauses" that occur during trials. How much time do these guys waste in a day? Does it all boil down to a mountain of paperwork or something? Courts seem to work less hours than S1.

Now the newest explanation has shifted to police being so scared of the big bad gun wielded by an untrained teenager that they couldn’t storm the classroom in Uvalde, despite being armed with the same gun and equipped with plates that can stop 5.56 mm rounds, being trained in active shooter response and having a 376-1 advantage.

I work in a role that has me interacting with cops from a variety of agencies. I‘ve heard a variety of explanations from them as to why the cops didn’t attempt to breach the classroom, ranging from “they thought it was a barricade situation so they held back” to the extremely offensive “in the wake of the BLM riots (their words not mine), the chief thought that people would protest and riot if they killed the shooter.” As if anyone whose opinion mattered would have a problem if someone killing kids got domed.

These cops told me these things with a straight face, although I could tell that they were grasping onto anything- ANYTHING- to absolve their fellow badge holders of their cowardice and moral failings.

That poo poo infuriated me.

It's amazing how flexible people's minds are to accommodate both a pro LEO and pro gun stance in response to this.

Funny you want a counter. After the Ohio derailment I looked up how many derailments we get a year... in 2022 there were at least 1,164 derailments. DOT also reports that about 5,800 "train car collisions" occur a year as well.

Makes me think that infrastructure that pretty much runs the country is being held together by duct tape, hope, and general luck.
