If the “modern slavery protections” go above constitutional minimum requirements, undocumented migrants could be excluded from that system in the US. The protection in the US just means the 14th amendment applies to non-citizens.

The only thing the US could do that would noticeably impact cartel violence is ending prohibition.

If all they had to do was chase a minimal return why did they lock their money up like a regular person investing in CDs?

It's part of how banks make money in a typical yield environment. Then things changed suddenly in the last year, and they had not given themselves as much of a cushion as other banks. It's the same reason there's also concern about other banks now, SVB wasn't doing anything particularly crazy as far as banking goes, but poor risk management meant they painted themselves into a corner when the underlying environment changed.

No, you can’t. You can’t weld floatie wings to this 30,000 ton bulk carrier to allow it to load more cargo.

Well now I want to see a cargo ship dropping enormous outriggers after getting out to sea. In theory wouldn't the extra stability let you load more since it would be ok for the ship to be lower in the water without risking capsizing?

That's why extra floaty bits makes sense. Going through a canal, just put the containers on the floaty bits and tow them behind you. THen when you're through, put them back on the ship and use the extra floats to keep you upright! Bing bong so simple.

Nonsense, you fold up the outriggers over top of the boat when going into a canal or docking, then drop them down when you're at sea. Same as you see on some ocean going kayaks, they're all just boats right?

Sandwiches are well and good, but like most things Americans could stand to eat smaller ones with more vegetables. It’s the same poo poo as beef, you don’t have to be a vegan but for like 98% of the population less red meat would lead to better health outcomes.

You do you, but going into old age with metabolic syndrome sucks a lot more than without.

Just how big are these “bags” though? Nickel is like $10/lb, and that’s high. Just the logistics of trying to steal a meaningful amount seems like a major headache.

You know, it’s funny that this keeps coming up. Corporate profits are still at record levels, just not growing as fast. Yet everyone seems to be convincing themselves that the economy is about to go off a cliff, and laying off people and cutting costs to get ahead of it. But it’s those cuts to employment and spending that are going to cause the recession everyone is afraid of. Predicting the economy is like predicting the patterns of herd animals in a sense, but it really feels like there are folks actively steering us towards the cliff here.

IMO there's a place for executions, the US just goes about it entirely the wrong way (by design). Substantial fraud or corruption by the rich or those in power should warrant capital punishment. These crimes undermine democratic systems and hurt way more people than any street violence. What happened is generally going to be well documented and anyone charged will have the resources able to defend themselves fully so way less risk of people being railroaded. The people committing these sorts of crimes thoroughly premeditate them, and can often continue to cause harm even post conviction.

Rick Scott for example - there is a clear paper trail that he is responsible for fraud of hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars, from public agencies. But even after this fraud came to light, he was allowed to continue to own/work for healthcare companies, and was elected to a governorship and senate seat where he undermined (and continues to undermine) public oversight and enforcement for the same sort of crimes he committed. He is, of course, staunchly pro death penalty - but in the conservative way, to intimidate poor people. We would have all been better off if he was executed.

Does China have more access to TikTok data than the US does to Instagram or Twitter data? Why would anyone assume that a technology company hosted in a particular country doesn't have an open feed to the intelligence services there?

And unlike China, the US uses this data to blow up people all over the world.

It's a whataboutism in the sense that it's being suggested that nothing be done about it because "eh, we do it to ourselves". It's like like letting your neighbor's dog piss in your house because your own dog isn't housebroken.

Even if it is whatboutism, why isn't that a valid question? The argument being made against TikTok is hypocrisy, mixed in with some orientalist racism. It's more like if your dog pissed all over your house, all of your neighbors houses, and occasionally took a poo poo in their pool, but you got all indignant the first time their dog peed on your lawn.

I mean, should we allow secret Chinese police stations because we've got lovely cops of our own?

Honest question, I'm not clear how this isn't just standard espionage? I would generally assume if you're an American (or British, or French, or Russian, etc) citizen who's in a prominent role or fugitive overseas, there's probably a less than above board embassy/consular official who's going to keep tabs on you to some extent. Normal course of business with international relations, countries will call it out when it's found out or even make some arrests for later exchanges now and then, and maybe the country spying loses some face.

Not that it shouldn't be called out when it's uncovered, but what's unique about this case?
