Poles is out here doing interviews with Peter King talking about how he has offers on the table for No. 1 that include a 2024 and 2025 first. Not sure I remember a GM ever publicly negotiating like this. Sure hope it works!

My guess is that coming down off 39 (in addition to foregoing a 2025 first, and maybe pushing the other second back to 2025) was part of the haggling to get Moore included

Now to start a prayer circle that the Panthers pick Richardson and keep Darnold as a bridge QB so that 2024 first can land as high as possible

I was actually kind of against trading with Carolina specifically because I thought they were having a really good offseason and plugging in Young/Stroud at QB in such a trash division could have them competitive very quickly. However, looking at their offensive situation now that Moore is gone…yeesh. At least they still have that trash division thing going for them

I would kind of like an OT at 9, just because I dream of having an offensive line as good as Philly's and I think the free agency options are pretty mid. Having cost-controlled bookends on the offensive line for the next few years would be sick as hell if it works out

I don't expect that to be the direction Poles goes in, though. I bet they sign McGlinchey and pick the best d-line prospect available at 9. Which is probably a smarter move, tbh; I presume you're less likely to find a great EDGE in free agency/later in the draft than you are a great offensive lineman

Their defense also sucks and they have no cap space. I just don't see a scenario where they win more than 6 games next year.

Scenario: 4 of their games are against the sorry-rear end Bucs and sorry-rear end Falcons, and 2 more are against the only slightly less sorry Saints (whose acquisition of a legitimately solid QB is presumably offset by the fact that they will be required to start guys off the street to fit under the cap)

Throw in games against the Texans, Colts, Titans, Bears, Packers, Vikings...that's a soft rear end schedule, man

There are some OK starter options at tackle but also there's a reason those guys hit free agency.

Brown is the best option available, but he looked shaky at times last year and supposedly wants to set the market for LT despite probably being around the middle of the pack at the position. Plus he doesn't fit the athletic mold Poles supposedly looks for in o-linemen

McGary and Taylor are coming off good years, and they're young, but also they kind of sucked before last year so you gotta worry about whether their contract year was an aberration.

McGlinchey is fine but his weakness is pass-blocking, which is already the weakness of the Bears offensive line, so... (this also goes for McGary)

Once you add in the fact that even the RTs are gonna be looking for $15-20 million/year paydays, and I'm pretty ambivalent about the tackle market. If I had to pick one, I'd probably try to spring for Taylor and pray that his pass blocking holds up because lord knows the Bears need it, but I'd just as soon focus our free agent spending on building the D-line and try to target an OT at 9.

Yeah, that's the thing. The pieces available in free agency could help the Bears get from trash to fine, which would be a huge upgrade. It just isn't very likely that they'll go from trash to legitimately good via free agency

I think the d-linemen in this market are a better value, so I'd spend there. I'd rather give $20 million a year to Dre'mont Jones than $18-20m to McGlinchey or Taylor

I didn't say they shouldn't sign anyone on the offensive line; I just said I'm fine if they don't sign a top-of-the-market tackle because they can easily draft one! It's not like this is just me being reactionary because the good tackles are signing somewhere else; I said the same thing two days ago:

But yes they should sign an iOL or two so they're not 100% reliant on a rookie elevating their offensive line performance

I would point out that there's a massive difference between an already-good team adding a big complementary piece or two in free agency and a barren team trying to build an entire roster via free agency, but that would be engaging with a faulty premise, because the Bears are being notably active in free agency

Man, what a Pace-rear end draft.

I was trying to remember why they didn't have so many picks and was like "OK, no first because of the Mack deal, not so bad, but why no second..." and I looked it up and it's because they traded it alongside a 4th round pick a year earlier so they could swoop in and grab...Anthony Miller!

I kind of wonder what Claypool's value would be if we tried to trade him again right now. One would assume nobody would give up anything worthwhile for him after a dud season with one year left under contract, but if the asking price for Jerry Jeudy is a first rounder, maybe the WR market is still wonky and you could blame his down year on general Bears stink to recoup a third or something

It's probably smarter to just keep him and see if Fields connects with him during training camp at this point, but it is a bummer that the trade basically broke as badly as it possibly could have to this point

I don't think there's any real harm in it unless other FO types get annoyed about him blabbing, and as a fan I prefer a GM that gives me too much insight into what he's thinking than nothing at all. So keep talking to impress Peter King (??), I say

I think the Panthers probably win 7+ games, especially considering their schedule, but I think their floor is still lower than most people might think. They’ve made a bunch of Solid Moves but it’s not like you can look at their roster and go “Oh no way they’re bad” just because they have a competent-seeming coaching staff and WRs who don’t project as sub-replacement level

Am I crazy for wanting Bijan at 9?

Yes.

A RB prospect basically has to become the best player in the league at his position to justify drafting him in the first half of the first round, and even if that happens, there's still a chance you're not going to feel great about giving him a second contract
