the realism that recognizes that sweden and finland joining nato are balancing, and so is poland arming itself to the teeth, and so is czechia getting the hate on, and so on

armenia also materially de-bandwagoned after russia was useless in the last nagorno-karabakh war (turkey and the azeris are picking land off of them and ethnically cleansing, so they're balancing with regards to the russians de facto, never mind that turkey remains an essential, if douchebaggy, part of nato - turkey not letting russia's other ships into the black sea is a large part of why ukraine is having such success in the black sea). serbia's doing whatever the gently caress they're doing. belarus is whistling on and still on russia's bandwagon

rather funnily, the montreaux convention (which describes the rules for turkey blocking the strait) is one of the only pieces of international law that isn't worthless in some outrageous material way

they're planning a canal to gently caress it up eventually, so this is a temporary statement, but it's had a good 100-year run

The reason montreaux convention works is that it gives its enforcement to Turkey not some vague nonsense about how some nations should do this or that.

The canal would be still under Turkish control as well, we just need to make sure we have some blackmail on Erdogan.

Hmm wait, isn't the convention good for Turkey, since it basically says Turkey has full control re which traffic can and cannot pass through the Bosporus?

Why would Turkey want to change that?

From wikipedia:

The canal aims to minimise shipping traffic in the Bosporus. It is projected to have a capacity of 160 vessel transits a day – similar to the current volume of traffic through the Bosporus, where traffic congestion leaves ships queuing for days to transit the strait.

Some analysts have speculated that the main reason for construction of the canal is to bypass the Montreux Convention, which limits the number and tonnage of warships from non-Black Sea powers that could enter the sea via the Bosporus, as well as prohibiting tolls on traffic passing through it. Indeed, in January 2018, the Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım announced that the Istanbul Canal would not be subject to the Montreux Convention.

The stated purpose of the project is to reduce the large marine traffic through the Bosporus and minimise the risks and dangers associated particularly with tankers.

About 41,000 vessels of all sizes pass yearly through the Istanbul Strait, among them 8,000 tankers carrying 145 million tons of crude oil. International pressure is growing to increase the marine traffic tonnage through the Turkish straits, which brings risks for the security of marine navigation during the passage.

Observers said the plan to charge transit fees to oil and gas tankers is unrealistic, as long as free passage is guaranteed through the Bosporous. However, Article 3 of the Montreux convention does allow sanitary inspections before transiting the Bosphorus, leading to speculation that Turkey might apply lengthy sanitary inspections, making the canal a faster alternative.

So it looks like it would give Turkey more freedom on tolls. Or let in more warships than allowed by the Convention.
You're currently not getting a carrier battle group into the black sea. Not even a french or british one!

Also reduced wait time as it's a very busy strait.

Even from the peak of the red terror my dad and grandad had stories of alcoholism and corruption and songs of how the rotwaffe falls out of the sky cause they're high on aviation alcohol, something that is rather recent news for westerners.

Hell he was smuggling stuff cross Finnish border since the border guard was so remote and drunk there was effectively no border security as who would want to break into the soviet union?

1970's Red Army was no joke. But the rot had started. Afghan war wasn't great and the collapse of the USSR meant a massive sell off. I think a lot of people thought that the Russian army was functioning. Sure it some corruption problems but what actually has happened in the past 2 years is a joke. What has happened in Ukraine is just wild. Having to repeatedly lie on state TV that actually, we are fighting the whole of NATO throughout this war.
