after spending $3k a month on snack cakes and $9k on Hamilton tickets, $400k/month is barely enough to live, that's why all the furniture in my McMansion is wood boards sitting on milk crates

There is an extreme difference between what you can do by yourself as a 100k+/yr salaried programmer, and what someone who washes dishes/does trade labor/whatever, who splits costs with somebody (or two somebodies!).

Like if nothing else changed except I had fixed work hours and guaranteed stable income in that range, I would effectively be in a different class than where i'm at now, yes.

I know this is a quote, but I’m kinda confused, is this saying that it is better to be the 100k computer person or the dishwasher person? It’s gotta be the computer person right, that makes more sense to me, but then I read the split three way thing and then I’m not sure if it is instead saying the dishwasher person is better off because they are splitting their bills instead of paying them alone. But then that’s like saying the three dishwashers pooling together to pay for a shared studio are better off than the computer touched who gets a studio to themself so that can’t be what is meant right?

Having fixed work hours and a stable income makes sense to me as a good thing, so I’m not confused here, except I don’t know what the comparison is, presumably wage labor. And then I guess by class what is meant is either a qualitative life category or socioeconomic division or both and it is unclear.

Like I’m not the best at reading comprehension, and it is unclear to me how to parse this, but I see either,
a.
“being a higher paid programmer is better than being a dishwasher crammed in with roommates, also if I had a guaranteed salary instead of intermittent wage labor it would be better even if the total amount was the same.”
b.
“high paid computer touchers are actually worse-off than dishwashers because the migrant dishwashers all get to pool rent and groceries in the single room shack where they live”
c.
Interpretation is the same as a. except along with“better” it is saying that the salaried programmer is not working class and that the dishwasher is working class

To me a. seems what is most likely meant, even though the unclear and arguably incorrect use of the word class confuses things. b. seems to me to be least likely, but again the wording is ambiguous. c. is wrong using normal labor terminology. Since the quote is receiving derision I assume then that most people read it as b. or c.? Perhaps there are other interpretations I’m not seeing? Trying to figure out what is going on here, or is this thread just designed to confuse me, in which case it has done a good job.

jesus lol i know about the basic marxist idea of class as defined by relationship to labor, and yeah in that way tech workers are in the same class but lol if you think salaried coders are living the same life as people further down making fractions of their income.

There is a distinction there worth making, and it's no shock that is the income level you get people extremely disinterested in anything involving worker solidarity.

Not saying they aren't "workers" in a strictly marxist sense. Of course they are, but if you're pretending you have anything in common with low level wage workers beyond that you're full of it lol
