Horror movies are having a bit of a moment right now. Its a genre that's often rife with just horrible, horrible films but there have been some really good recent ones.

Barbarian, X, M3GAN, Swallow, Pearl etc. have all been very very good. A lot of them blend actual real life terrifying poo poo into the supernatural and kind of blur the lines of the genre. It's good to see some new life being injected into a genre that has produced some real stinkers.

Anyways use this thread to talk about some recent good or so bad they're good horror movies of recent because there are quite a few floating out there.

I didn't want to post this in CD because that place sucks.

There's always been good and bad horror. And BAD horror isn't even BAD in the conventional sense, its often good. A lot of the classics are essentially trash cinema.

The only things that makes a horror movie ACTUALLY poo poo are:
1) It's a cash grab .
2) There's no honesty, conviction or dedication to the genre.

A horror film made for $1000 or $10,000 has the honesty, conviction and dedication to the genre a Netflix original just doesn't, for example. I'll watch Ogroff aka Mad Mutilator (1982) any day over some Blumhouse turd.

I liked he VVitch quite a bit but maybe that's a stretch of the definition.

I liked Midsommar too, but that is even further off.

I enjoyed Barbarian and M3gan.

I also watched the first Nightmare on Elmstreet movie for the first time. I had seen segments on cable growing up but never the whole movie or unedited. It was pretty good!

The VVitch is just a loving great film altogether. The Lighthouse, too.

Its a couple of years old now but the Suspiria remake was a lot better than I expected it to be. It works because it goes for a different style all together to the original.

I saw Skinamarink the other week and I really don’t get it.

Horror is a great genre because as Piss Creep alluded to, there's equal space and value for really aesthetically driven artsy poo poo and for schlock so long as it's done with conviction and a good sense of humor.

I sort of wished M3GAN was scarier or more violent but I did sincerely enjoy it.

I personally think The Witch is a bit of a slog on rewatch and I LOL at discreetly sexy pirate Satan every time but I loved Lighthouse and am excited to see what Eggers does next. Same with Aster, I think Hereditary is definitely a modern standout and I'm looking forward to what else he does for the genre.

I need to start using Shudder, but the app won't work on my dumb smart TV so I'd have to queue it up on the laptop and I simply won't

Excellent AV, one of my favorite movies of all time. My favorite thing to do in serious friendships is to make people watch both House and one of my other favorite movies of all time, Phantasm.

I didn't really like the new Suspiria - thought it was too long and the allegories too hamfisted. Also the multiple Tildas were funny but not in an endearing way. The dance sequences were excellent, though. The old film still slaps so I'd still recommend it over and above the remake.

I watched Terrifier 2 with one of my best friends and it's so gross. poo poo slaps. Art the Clown is a gift.

A Suspiria remake is just a stupid idea I wont condone regardless of the outcome.

Skinamarink should be a 15 - 20min short. It just drags. It was Meh to OK at best.

Indie Horror lately is something I will take a gamble on watching. Even when some of them aren't great or didn't land for me, there's a good chance I'll feel it tried in a way that I didn't waste my time.

I don't go in for gory poo poo, especially when it involves innocent people getting brutalized and/or tortured (gently caress hostel). I very much enjoy creepy stuff way more, so "It Follows" was, to me, pretty much perfect, despite the bonkers premise of it being transfered via sex.

Goddamn, that scene with the old woman on the school campus, and then the tall guy. :gonk:

I felt like I was having a panic attack watching Hereditary.

Not because it was scary, but because of how anxious it made me feel.

Hereditary was incredible and I don't know if I can ever watch it again. The family dynamics hit too close to home (that's what panicked me) and my then partner was absolutely melting down in the theatre next to me.

It was very, very good, and I loved it. I dunno if I can sit all the way through it at once though because wow it was so good at ramping the anxiety.

I bought a Shudder subscription and immediately watched Farm House. It's not good. I will probably watch it again, though.

This is 100% correct. They put money into scripts and directors other people wouldn't, but it's not like they're writing, directing, casting, crewing and then shooting the movie. People going like "OOOH AAAAH A24" is some dumb poo poo.

The VVitch, Hereditary, Midsommar, and The Lighthouse were all mentioned in the thread. I was specifically going by those mentions alone, am well aware they do it all and not just horror thorough many talented people in the industry rather than simplifying it as “OMG A24,” and couldn’t give any less of a poo poo of some of their other bland films. Mid90’s was rear end puke gently caress garbage boring.

But I am a dumb poo poo. I’ll give you that one.

horror movies are usually a decent watch because they play the premise straight and frequently don't have a third act that completely ruins the film

Hi hello teen witch unsurprising horror fan! Ask me about my corny tattoos.

big fan of this new wave of horror from the likes of A24 and Blumhouse for the most part. I legit tried on a dress that reminded me of Pearl’s red dress and I’m buying it next paycheck.

I’m hoping this new wave also finally lifts the curse of the genre film. I feel that scifi has it close as they tend to have more prestige films, but I want some gore at the Oscars.

Also if you have cool letterboxd reviews you should do share them here

Agree with everything here, glad the 90s gore fest is past.

I would add I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House too - last time I mentioned it it got a lot of hate, but that movie makes me deeply uncomfortable.

Oh, and The Blackcoat's Daughter. drat. Kiernan Shipka is so great in it.
