Hey friends how about we watch a movie tonight!? A long-time friend of movie nites picked this one out: it's 1976's God Told Me To:

This is a legitimately creepy horror movie, from scifi/horror/police procedural auteur Larry Cohen. If you do know Cohen it's almost certainly for The Stuff ('85) or MAYBE for The Invaders, a 1967 Quinn Martin production for NBC. He was a really interesting guy who pumped out a ton of movies about New York cops vs the paranormal, not all masterpieces but, that's the price you pay for directing lots of titles. This particular outing is his most critically well received, and it has some weird technical distinctions too. It steals a little footage from the British kit-bash classic Space 1999, and features comedian Andy Kaufman in his first feature role, a little cameo that's pretty funny to see if you know anything about him. And period New York stars as itself, always interesting.

A small trigger warning for those who may need it: this film deals, somewhat obliquely, with themes of sexual assault.

4pm PST 7pm EST at https://cytu.be/r/BYOBmovies, shorts start a half hour before the show! Be well, friends!

Weirdest thing: I've seen all these movies and it was the degloving scene in loving Gerald's Game that made me actually feel faint. Never had that reaction before or since, and it surprised the hell outta me as it happened. I wonder to this day if it wasn't a superbly-timed hot flash.

But video nasties are a joy for their hilarious and inventive practical effects. There's something really special about Z budget gore!

I Feel Pretty!

I made it through most of Terrifier, but when I saw there was still 45 minutes left and no progress towards an ending I quit. I probably missed out on some more epic decapitations or whatever but I didn't care enough to finish.

I did appreciate the body parts looking just fake enough the longer you looked at them. The saw scene made me wonder just how badly the writer hates women to come up with that, but it's shocking for a reason I guess.

The thing with Terrifier is that you need to get through the first one to get to the second one, which I feel was much better. I’m also convinced it was shot on Long Island, it’s too familiar to me.

They do everything. People are all "ooh A24" and you go on IMDB or the Wiki and there's a lot of chaff for every good film. Its ridiculous to be a fan of a Production house of that scale.

I appreciate having solid mid-tier studios like A24 as an alternative to the big name ones but yeah, I agree their best stuff earns them an undue amount of free publicity.

Best horror movie is The Seventh Curse where they fight an evil skeleton that turns into a xenomorph and they break the bones of like 500 stuntmen by running them over with cars. Oh and like 8 million babies are thrown into a baby crusher.

I think you'll find it's actually the gate where a kid is having a sleepwalking dream his mother that passed away came back and he hugs her and is so happy then someone's like BILLY WHAT ARE YOU DOING and he wakes up to find he's dancing with a dead dog

Then you get to the second installment of the Three Mothers Trilogy (Inferno) and it's a slog. Great cinematography and very vibrant, but boring as hell. Someone on these boards long ago told me don't even bother with Mother of Tears because it's even more of a bore. I may watch it someday just to say that I completed the trilogy, but Suspiria is the only good one (I've seen), IMO.
