oof. sufficient quantities of competent gore can sustain me through something under 90 minutes even n a movie otherwise devoid of any merit, but that thing was like two and a half hours long and judging by all of the previous films, the only other remotely notable thing would have been the director shamelessly shouting "but do you see how big the clowns teeth look when he smiles?" coming through ever so subtly through the rear speakers during the credits when watched in a theatre will old school thx surround sound

Not recent at all but Green Room is fantastic. Kind of along the lines of real world poo poo that op mentions. Maybe it's not quite horror, but dumb violents neonazis irl are way scarier than made up zombie bullshit.

X was very good, haven't gotten around to watching Pearl yet. I lost some faith in Ti West after Sacrament but glad to see he's still got it. His older stuff's worth watching -- House of the Devil is very good if you like slow burn horror.

Most recently, Smile was pretty good. Not sure the ending was my favorite but dug the psychological layer throughout the whole thing.

Offshoots including Return of the Living Dead, Shaun of the Dead and Zombi 2 (aka Zombie Flesh Eaters)? Would recommend any of those if he hasn't seen them.
One Cut of the Dead is a Japanese film from a few years ago. It's super low-budget, but full of charm and best gone into blind.
City of the Living Dead is worth a watch. It's surreal and nightmarish and at times boak-inducing, in other words classic Fulci.

I'm assuming he's watched the rec series already, but if not the first rec felt like a fresh twist to the zombie thing at the time. You might decide it's literally some grimdark poo poo from 2007 and not necessarily be wrong (down to the year), but I think it's usually well-regarded.

I'd avoid the rest as they get progressively worse (rec 2 is ok, rec 3 is straight up garbage).

It astonishes me that up until COVID they were still touring. Well, "Lois" retired from the touring but still recorded music with them until her death in 2015. It's amazing what musicians just keep going for decades after their moment in the spotlight. They did say they were doing a 'retirement tour' in 2019, so maybe their time is finally done, but still, it's impressive.

since he's still into zombies, pontypool might be a good choice for you, too.

also the zombi sequels made by claudio fragasso and bruno mattei, though they may maybe be too schlocky for your own tastes.

given the presence of cannibal corpse and behemoth i also think your partner might enjoy deathgasm and the tv series todd and the book of pure evil. more comedy than horror, but both tons of fun.

you're next, the guest and seance all have solid "female protagonist refuses to be a victim" themes. those and jakob's wife seem like they would fit pretty well into your "good for her" sub-genre.

e: bodies, bodies bodies is also good fun. i'm a big fan of watching whiny entitled dipshits selfish themselves to death.

Oh wow, this is one I always casually forget because I haven’t seen it in some time. I own it and it is incredible. Gonna give it a watch today since I’ve got nothing else to do. Thanks for reminding me of this gem :tipshat: George C. Scott should have done more horror films because he was great in The Exorcist III, too.

I read the book and really disliked it, it just didn't click for me. Then I saw an extended bunch of clips from the movie recently, and all of them looked really cool. I just picked up a Blu Ray copy for cheap, hoping to watch it soon.

The novel just seemed really boring and long-winded to me. It had some really good scares, though, so I'm hoping the movie is a more condensed version of that.
