Would it have been any better if they had kept the original (semi autobiographical) outcome where the brother survives, I wonder. Having Seita die robs him and the audience a chance to see him grow beyond being a dumb kid who screwed up. Like what happened in real life because Seita is based on the original author's childhood

Probably

Mostly it's just unearned pathos

Like in the arrival example I posted earlier, it starts with a real heart wrencher, but justifies it as a novel character moment

In grave of the fireflies it just seems like misery porn more than anything, and to some extent I can't help but view it as a boomer saying "you youths don't know what we had to go through" hence why that stare at the end really rubs me the wrong way

Like what if slice of life that depresses you for no reason/to make you feel guilty about your life just isn't a good story

Literally anything would probably had been better for the narrative imho

To contribute to the thread with Miyazaki

That bit in Ponyo where she is running on the water/magic fish alongside the car just makes me well up for some reason

Some juxtaposition between the seriousness of the situation, the hyperreal nature of Ponyo, and the childlike joy of it really gets me for reasons I can't really explain

It's part of the reason I can't watch Game of Thrones either

I know they did used to kill children to protect their heritage but watching a baby snagged off its mothers breast and killed in front of her is too much for me

I mean, you really gotta treasure that era of corny, sincere sci-fi, because everything is either under several layers of irony nowadays, is overly grim/apocalyptic/dystopic, or is just a homage that has none of the kitschy charm of the older stuff.

It's kind of like sincere High Fantasy flicks. You don't see poo poo like Boorman's Excalibur anymore, so even if it's not the best by objective standards (no one watches movies objectively anyway, not a single person on the planet) it still owns because it's a unique vibe that just isn't being replicated or effectively modernized.

It's the one from the Heisei era (1984 - 1995) movies where Jr. has grown up and actually looks like his dad. Jr. is the Godzilla roaring at the end after the original Big G melts down.

I agree it's heartbreaking

But I have a real bone to pick with grave of the fireflies, it's a beautiful movie but a poo poo story that doesn't hold up past a first watch IMO

It's literally just bad poo poo happens to a dumb kid for a bit

He doesn't learn or have an arc, he's just the same dumb kid at the end, and then had the audacity to start at me at the end as if I'm the one to solve his problems

Visually and Emotionally it's really poignant, but that isn't everything that goes into making a story

I disagree, he absolutely has an arc from brother to parent, and finding joy in being a parent, so when he loses Setsuko he's not just a brother, he's also a parent losing what was his reason, and thus will, to live.

I agree with these guys here about how it's this juxtaposition of beauty and horror to create a visceral experience, as well as a eulogy for the forgotten children of Japan who died during the war.

False. There is only one electron and it has never stopped
This might not be as well known, but: Thirteen.

The music that plays gets me, alongside knowing that the ending isn't necessarily happy. Until you learn that the actress/writer/producer unfucked her life by making the film and getting emancipated.

Also in Eigth Grade when the dad explains to the kid how he loves her.

I... did not have a stellar childhood.

I am more amiable to this reading, like movie as eulogy/epitaph/tombstone is a neat idea , I'm not making GBS threads on the movie's cultural standing as a decent representation of the horrors of war experienced in some capacity by the audience and the people that slip through the cracks. And I agree that it creates a visual experience for sure it is a stunning movie. But it feels like a tone poem more than a story to me is all I guess

However that stare at the end really, really rubs me the wrong way

Also great that Wallace screaming Freedom was the last thing the king heard before he croaked.

edit: not related to movies but since it's St. Patty's Day +1, I saw this a few years ago and cried. The Dropkick Murphy's show up at the house of a child with cancer he wasn't able to go outside so they played a little show for him.
