idk where you got anything about "honor" from but making sure your companies are getting good terms in international trade is a pretty basic function of a government and a situation where their market is completely closed to us while we kick back and let them at ours can only be seen as a failure. and this is completely aside from the horrible fact that social media has strategic implications now. see: that time secret US bases got geolocated cause Troops kept running laps with their fitbits, or all the russians that were posting poo poo on telegram and giving away positions till they started confiscating phones.

so in summary, the decision should be a no-brainer: ban tik tok. by all means ban the other stuff too but tik tok first. thank you

"Strategic implications" The reason the fossils in congress want to ban a social media site is a) they don't understand it (naturally) and b) they think it's 1963 and we're still in the middle of the Cold War.

This honestly isn't directed at you: the hysteria over Tik Tok is reminiscent to me of 2003 and the lead up to Iraq. Same brain dead nationalism; just directed at the "inscrutable" Chinese instead of Middle Easterners.

oh yeah totally man. you can't actually DO anything with the massive data collection capabilities social media platforms afford their owners, the entire concept is just paranoid xenopCatholic Group Spends Millions on Dating App Data to Out Gay Priests

Of course you can do a lot of damage with data collection capabilities of social media, and we desperately need (and won't get in our bought-and-paid for congress) a digital bill of rights so that our data belongs to us.

Banning Tik Tok is selective outrage when they all collect data. It tells me a lot that we can't even get the official story straight on why we need to censor a platform (however stupid it might be) - foreign policy? American social media market share? Data collection? We just don't like Tik Tok?

Somewhere deep within the Bytedance office complex, the liaison from the Ministry of State Security re-reads the headline in disbelief. It couldn't be true, yet it was. No longer would they be able to harvest American data; the capitalist pigdogs had finally passed a Digital Bill of Rights. Their data belonged to them now. are they really though? wtf are they doing that's so insidious to America, specifically.

they're a business rival but only because our current system depends on there being nations with a lower cost of living than us to make our goods, because we literally can't afford the goods we make for ourselves at the rates we get paid. and so we turned to china, and it used being in such a position to gain leverage and world power and somehow all of that leads us to here, this moment where our response is trying to ban tiktok for the second time with our conditions being that the Chinese can be involved in its administration but shouldn't own it/make money from it.

I'm more getting at the idea that the concept of China being treated by the US as a threat and a rival is less about what China has done to us, and more from the US realizing, far far too late, we've enriched China beyond them needing us anymore, and that is absolutely terrifying.

so are they really a threat and a rival, or are they just no longer bound to us?

StrangersInTheNight

also unfortunately that's not 'human nature', that's capitalism, which isn't inherent, it was created! and it's unsustainable! eventually you run out of places where the COL is lower, but that's a problem for your descendents to figure out, right?

The relationship here is enormously complicated and summing it up on a post on the Internet is not going to happen, but this is not 'China doesn't need us anymore'. I mean, there is an economical piece of this, but China is involved with a ton of domestic cooperate and political espionage, can be a problematic force in some trade agreements, and can be a thorn in the side of international politics. They have a warm enough relationship with Russia to not condemn the invasion of Ukraine in the UN and they have their fingers in a lot of other countries doing lovely things. There are a huge pile of things that makes the relationship between the US and China complicated and dicey.

This it not some defense of the US or insisting that the US is doing only good things, but poo poo is very complex and there are OK-to-good reasons for the US to be wary of China.

absolutely, there's a bunch of political reasons to hold them at arms-length which are more complex, I'm being reductive to point out they've never actually done anything to us and so there's also a hefty dose of propaganda in there, which can be seen in this thread with the 'business interests' chat

we made them a rival, and how much of an enemy they are has yet to be seen, and will in part be dictated by how we treat them on the world stage. It all feels like theatre, flexing to try and cow China, that's going to fail bc what reason do they have to give in?
