People who are complaining about short attention spans are correct, but again: blaming Tik Tok alone for this is selective outrage.

precision posted:It's not that the behavior is different, it's the delivery system. Our brains just aren't well equipped to deal with so much data so quickly. That, and surfing through channels gave you a randomized selection of networks and shows appealing to vastly different demographics and interests. Usually in the middle of existing broadcast times. Tiktok and youtube's algorithms present you with what they determine will appeal to you. It's a much narrower spectrum of content, designed to exclude anything they don't think is in your wheelhouse. Which is great for engagement but keeps you in a bubble, sheltered from new faces or topics while constantly reinforcing your own biases to the point where the rest of humanity seems alien. precision posted:There isn't some weird Chinese conspiracy, the world has just gotten that bad at self control Twitter had Vine which was pretty similar, but despite it's popularity it was shut down because it wasn't profitable. Tiktok may or may not be able to keep the lights running because of subsidies from the Chinese government. Who knows how Youtube Shorts will do, but Youtube itself was unprofitable when Google bought it and it continued to lose money for the next decade Aside from that, it's written into China's cybersecurity laws that the government have unfettered access to any data that Bytedance touches. The Tiktok app itself collects an excessive amount of data about wifi networks and home routers, and security researchers have documented that the app itself is poorly-secured. It's also a matter of Chinese cybersecurity law that any company must inform the MIIT of any known vulnerabilities or backdoors within two days, but it doesn't require them to patch them in a timely manner. It also makes it illegal for anyone in China to disclose info about any security vulnerabilities to anyone besides the government. Which is why the Chinese government so often emphasizes with specific wording that they don't require companies to "create backdoors". Which is true, they don't need to. The NSA and western intelligence agencies also largely depend on exploiting existing backdoors before anyone notices and fixes them Also if you delete your Tiktok account Bytedance is legally barred from actually deleting your info, they must create and maintain a backup in case the government wants a peek. Tiktok's American execs went to congress and said that neither they nor Bytedance would abide by any legal data requests from the Chinese government, which is a claim so laughable I have to believe they were under the threat of termination if they said otherwise. The company wouldn't be permitted to exist in defiance of Chinese law. Even Microsoft and Apple had to set up new servers on Chinese soil for storing data on Chinese citizens, just so the CCP would have the jurisdiction to freely access them. This was a legal condition of them being able to do business in the country. Anyway, the concern isn't that a foreign government will get data on a bunch of zoomers, just that it will give their intelligence agencies a leg up if any of those young users share a household and home network with any actual targets (military, activists, scientists, public officials, academics, journalists etc) je1 healthcare fucked around with this message at 20:21 on Mar 19, 2023 |

I honestly have no problem banning tiktok but that’s is cover is the “think of the children” is pretty funny. No, it’s because China uses it to harvest data and they heavily censor the internet both for dissent reasons and for social reasons like internet addiction
