Stupid as gently caress.

Talk about selective outrage. I guess only American companies are allowed to spy on their users.

lol you do know that US social media is banned in china right? No facebook, twitter, instagram, etc. No reason they should be able to exploit our social media morons if we can't exploit theirs

So we have to become China to fight China?

it would probably take way more than banning one lovely video platform before we could say we truly adopted Xi Jinping Thought but in either case it's certainly not "selective outrage", just a pretty boring and reasonable tit-for-tat retaliation

I don't feel like there's anything reasonable about it. Who the gently caress cares what China does? If we're going to make them into the new Big Bad Guy of the 2020s, then why should we give a poo poo if they ban Facebook?

It's not that I care about Tik Tok; I'm allergic to the government censoring a site because of brain dead xenophobia, which is precisely what this is.

yeah absolutely, who the gently caress cares what a country of one and a half billion people does. no reason the us government should think about that. foreign policy genius

You're not even talking about foreign policy but tit for tat because they banned Facebook. Like, who the gently caress cares about the "honor" (lol) of American social media companies?

Tiny Bug Child posted:

idk where you got anything about "honor" from but making sure your companies are getting good terms in international trade is a pretty basic function of a government and a situation where their market is completely closed to us while we kick back and let them at ours can only be seen as a failure. and this is completely aside from the horrible fact that social media has strategic implications now. see: that time secret US bases got geolocated cause Troops kept running laps with their fitbits, or all the russians that were posting poo poo on telegram and giving away positions till they started confiscating phones.

so in summary, the decision should be a no-brainer: ban tik tok. by all means ban the other stuff too but tik tok first. thank you

"Strategic implications" The reason the fossils in congress want to ban a social media site is a) they don't understand it (naturally) and b) they think it's 1963 and we're still in the middle of the Cold War.

This honestly isn't directed at you: the hysteria over Tik Tok is reminiscent to me of 2003 and the lead up to Iraq. Same brain dead nationalism; just directed at the "inscrutable" Chinese instead of Middle Easterners.

Of course you can do a lot of damage with data collection capabilities of social media, and we desperately need (and won't get in our bought-and-paid for congress) a digital bill of rights so that our data belongs to us.

Banning Tik Tok is selective outrage when they all collect data. It tells me a lot that we can't even get the official story straight on why we need to censor a platform (however stupid it might be) - foreign policy? American social media market share? Data collection? We just don't like Tik Tok?

I don't want them to have your data either. Or tiny Bug Child's. Or anyone else's. That's why we need a digital bill of rights; not banning a website because of anti-China paranoia.

And apparently, we should care about American social media company market shares for reasons.

It's exactly the same as W saying that we should fight terror in late 2001 by going to the mall :patriot:

The idea that the government should give a poo poo about the interests of a business is pretty toxic, yes.

Brace yourself for something that sound like conspiracy nonsense:

Tik toc is a Chinese weapon, there are a LOT of actual qualified experts saying there’s a very nefarious reason the Chinese government is pushing an app on the west that’s disruptive to the mental health and ability to learn/focus and concentrate of this generations youth. There are already massive gulfs in education and life quality between users and non users of tik toc.

To paraphrase one researcher “compare the current generation of western children (using Tik toc) to the Chinese children not using it (because China does not allow its youth to use it) and extrapolate this two generations down the line”.

Propaganda through pink sauce? That's a bit....out there for me.
