I have an extremely overgrown fig tree in my backyard that I've been trimming down when I get the time. If you toast the wood over a fire or put it in the oven it smells incredible. It has this kind of sweet, woody/floral smell. It's also fine as a whittling wood while it's still green (not that I'm an expert). If I'm in a long teams meeting I just grab a piece and start carving away.

The radiata pine I used for my shop’s drawer fronts was cheap and looks great with milk paint. Lets the grain through but not the weird colors from cheap-rear end pine

Any basswood fans? It's not a very pretty wood bc it has basically no grain, but that also makes it great for carving things like duck decoys.
