Wonder how that actually works in-world. Continental Airlines?

Not that he would be able to use them, being excommunicado and all.

Mantis42

Well John's excommunicado so he has to fly the airline all the npc nightclub dancers use. Probably has strobe lights.

There should be a blu ray extra that's just all the travel shown in real time. He goes from New York to Morocco to Osaka back to New York to Berlin to Paris.

This doesn't sound promising.

And so, we’re building out the world and when that five movie comes, will be organic — will be organically grown out of how we’re starting to tell those stories. But you can rely on a regular cadence of John Wick.”

Yeah, I've started to associate the Wickian way of assassins doing things like Murim-type organizations in Korean fiction. An entirely separate power structure of martial artists with fantastical powers, who are charged with governing themselves, and dealing with their own little politics, or else the state government steps in and governs them for them.

I enjoyed this edition a lot, and will probably like it even more on a rewatch. But oddly, as good as the last hour was action-wise, it had the worst missteps of the series for me. We did watch this over 2 evenings so perhaps that colored my perception, but the stair falling gag - specifically the 2nd part - did not land at all. I actually loved the first segment, but, as others have mentioned, falling down the second set of stairs felt too video gamey. I have upgraded this opinion after seeing it described as the moment he starts to take advantage of having friends (and they did summit the stairs fast enough the second time to not get frustrated) but it still felt like a cruel joke given how punishing that would actually be.

Then the dog pissing on the bodyguard happened. Again, did not land at all because the guy didn’t seem especially hateful towards dogs - he simply reacted, and it didn’t feel like he was enough of a dick to deserve that. If that guy is a few steps slower, the dog goes for John. Are we then supposed to root against John Wick? He’s been trained to be a tool and does his job, it’s not personal. The final headshot was good enough for me.

Either way, the ending landed it for me, though I could give a poo poo about the stakes by the end. I mean, they try to prevent John from making the duel, the punishment for which is summary execution - except that’s exactly what everyone is attempting as they block his way to making it by dawn. And the Marquis’ point was a little too accurate - who cares if he lives or dies? Is he going to open a boat rental shop or write the next great American novel? But the duel was interesting enough that I let that lie to the side and just enjoyed it.

I realize this reads like I hated it, but I just noticed some of the excesses that come with a decade long 4 part series. You fall a little too in love with the subject. The actions scenes were superlative - loved the overhead fight (mixing dragons breath with the overhead view to give it visual interest as brilliant), Osaka battle, the fight with Killa, rave central, and especially the Mario kart roundabout scene - and my only complaint is you could cut a minute or two from each. There was always a, like, fifth wave of mooks you could cut and get this thing down to like 2:05 as befits the end of a quadrology.

My favorite part, though, was Donnie Yen (2nd place to Adkins and his kicks). I haven’t seen anything by him before, though I knew the name, and the halting, limber but sloppy, insanely quick sword jab style was like nothing I’ve seen before. Cartoon like yet precise. Playing a blind character must make this so incredibly difficult because you’re often looking away, or off into the distance, from your opponent and still he nails the choreography.

Overall, pretty good. I immediately started discounting the lore when the sequel hit, but the action, sets, talent, and cinematography made me an ongoing fan. Even with a whole series worth of world building and ridiculous lore weighing it down a bit, I think this has the best version of the good stuff about this series.

I told my bf if he had any disbelief in the action scenes that Wick is literally a murder demon in the murder for hire(cult) world of this movie series. He earned absolution. He only dies because he's at the acceptance point of his mourning for Helen. I mean, this is outright stated as canon in the first movie so...

I must've been out traveling or something because I somehow managed to miss this movie in the theaters. I liked it but I think the first one might be still my favorite, though I haven't seen it since it first came out. They just get sillier and more bloated, though there's good stuff too.

Cons
Some of the action stuff gets a bit stale and repetitive, particularly constantly being in close quarters where John will grab someone, toss them around and then shoot them point-blank.
The Table stuff is dumb but not in a fun way
The movies are very grimdark and the comedy stairs falls and dog peeing feel out of place
Have we seen Donnie Yen's character before? They were supposed to be good friends but I was like whatever I don't care about this guy.

Pros
Hotline Miami shot was fun
In fact most of Paris stuff was good
Yen's fights were fun but also stretching the disbelief a bit too much even for this dumb movie.
