It wasn't AoE2 for me unless the farms surrounded a windmill. My biggest annoyance there was always one square gap because the farms were a bit too big for the windmill itself.

I picked up John Man's The Mongol Empire a couple of years ago, I remember that one being a solid read. Maybe one I should revisit at some point.
