Those Trump voters are going to be voting for Trump in 2024.

I'm not surprised that Bernie's not running (he's 82, he's already lost twice, he'd be against an incumbent in the primary), even if I would immediately have volunteered for his campaign if he had.

But it does aggravate that feeling of hopelessness. Nobody currently can step into his place, the mainline options for Democrats are all godawful and the most optimistic outlook is "well maybe in 2036 we can get a decent candidate, assuming the republicans don't win any election between now and then and also the environment doesn't collapse". The bigger reason is that Germany had to go through the Allies' allies to be able to fight the Soviets, so they never had the option.

If Hitler could have somehow invaded the USSR without chewing up eastern Europe first, the capitalists would have backed him instead.

This is an actual question. This assertion seems so out there I can't tell if I'm misreading which capitalists you're talking about or getting whooshed by sarcasm.

My contention is that it's wrong to see WW2 as the capitalists siding with commies over fascists, because they were attacked first, due to surrounding the fascists. It wasn't a decision made rationally or out of altruism, they didn't make the decision at all.

So obviously Stalin was either dumb as poo poo or he somehow thought the guy who equated Bolsheviks and Jews was going to honor a deal.

Or he just wanted more of Eastern Europe under the red star.

The USSR had spent five years trying to ally with the west against the Nazis. A French-Soviet agreement in 1935 was Hitler's justification for remilitarizng the Rhineland. The Soviets wanted to attack Germany to defend Czechoslovakia, but when the West decided on appeasement, the Soviets figured "if they'll sell out the Czechs, they'll sell us out too".

Stalin was dumb as poo poo because he 1. had all his commanders shot and 2. sat there like a lemon because he thought Germany wouldn't be so stupid as to start a two-front war even when all his intelligence services and Britain's were reporting the Barbarossa buildup. And yes, he wanted former territories of the Russian Empire too.

In terms of the current conversation, though, there are much better comparisons to make. Would you say that the Anglo-Polish defensive alliance made Nazi Germany feel threatened and provoked the invasion that followed? Because that's very similar to the argument that's being made right now about Ukraine and NATO.

A neat historical connection: the French-Soviet pact of 1935 was explicitly referenced by Hitler as the reason to remilitarize the Rhineland.

And appeasement was such a disaster that it made the Soviets go with forging a pact with Germany instead, because after the Allies sold out Czechoslovakia, Russia had no reason to believe they wouldn't sell them out too.

I think people are stuck on America (or more generally the West) being Good. "Why didn't the Soviets believe that the British Empire would keep its word?" "Why does Russia feel threatened that the Anti-Russia Alliance headed by its biggest rival is pressing up against its borders?" "Don't they understand we're the Good Guys?"

Inshallah, Putin's government will soon collapse and I support Ukraine's fight for independence. But I keep getting a weird sense in these discussions of Russia and Russians being an Evil nation that does Evil, in like a cosmic or religious sense. We've had Cuba blockaded for 60 years, but see that's Different from Russia attacking the small countries near it when they move out of its sphere of influence.

People want to believe that somebody somewhere has figured out a better way of doing things. It's not specifically "they're getting rid of universal healthcare RIGHT NOW", but like, take the French protests. For as much as I approve of them burning buildings down, it never actually stops anything. Ten years ago it was rebelling against raising the retirement age to 62, now it's rebelling against raising it to 64. Didn't stop it, the government just waits out the protests then does whatever it wanted to do (move rightward). Italy and Eastern Europe are literally going capital-f Fascist. A little bit of immigration and Sweden's now got a hard-right government with actual nazis as their second-largest party. Germany's given up on anything climate-related thanks to the Greens. Britain's Labour leader outright declared they're a centrist party now.

At no point was I making an argument that Denmark is a perfect leftist country, nor that it has leftist policies on every single subject. It's possible to be one of the most left countries in the world and still not have a socialist or communist economic structure. They are not mutually exclusive concepts.

"One of the most left countries in the world" isn't a ringing endorsement when the whole world is hard right. It's like saying Italy was the 'most left' of the Axis Powers, or Biden is the 'most left' President in nearly a century. If Denmark and Sweden are squealing about how they must secure a future for their people because there's a tide of Others threatening to wash them away, then at best they're some kind of nationalist socialists.

Racism as we know it developed alongside capitalism as the Europeans had to justify using slaves to work in their colonies in the Americas. Christians were absolutely not supposed to be enslaving Christians, but dammit, all these pagans keep dying of disease, how are we supposed to make any money?! I don't agree that they're inherently linked, but their shared history makes it very difficult to unravel the two, and it certainly can't be done by just electing a few minorities or promoting #girlboss CEOs (as can be seen by how many of those girlboss CEOs turned out to be exactly as exploitative as their male counterparts).

Ultimately that's why I do lean more towards 'no war but class war' - a black capitalist is a capitalist first. Putting more diversity into the capitalist class won't improve anything for anyone except those specific individuals, because wealth overrides everything and wow, turns out Cosby, Obama, Harris and Chappelle will happily spin around and stomp on the people who are supposed to be "like them" according to idpol.

The Romans didn't consider themselves part of "the white race" with their equals the Germanic tribes, destined to dominate "the slave races" of Africa. Roman slavery was widespread and often brutal, but it wasn't based on "everybody of this color is automatically a slave". Likewise there were no demands for birth certificates when guys from Africa or Arabia rose to become Emperors.

In the medieval era, religion was the driver of conflict. The Ethiopians were treated as equals on the few occasions there was contact, Genghis Khan was hailed as a hero until people realized The persecutions of Jews were religious in nature, and the Crusades hammered into whoever was a heretic or infidel regardless of their skin color.

I realize this seems like splitting hairs - what does it matter if the angry mob burning your house down is technically doing it because you worship god wrong, not because you're too brown. But I think it does matter because racism as we know it is not inherent to humanity. It is about 500 years old and it was conjured up so some rich people could get richer. It's not a demon unable to be exorcised, it is something we can beat.

Byzantine

The persecutions of Jews from the Romans onward was based on religion, as were the Crusades (which were first kicked off by the Turks invading Byzantium, although they rapidly turned into attacking any heretics or heathens).

Mellow Seas posted:

I also think that if Black people didn't exist in America, if we didn't have this history of racial subjugation, then we would've invented them. That is to say, we would've readily invented bigotries. The "white" identity only exists in opposition to blackness, and would be happy to subdivide itself into a hierarchy in its absence. S

The 'white identity' as we know it didn't exist before it was invented to support enslaving black people in the Americas. The Romans didn't see themselves as the same as the Germans, while in the medieval era Ethiopia was considered part of Christendom with no asterisks.

I mean sure, if you define literally all violence as racist, then racism is inherent to humanity, but I don't feel that's a useful definition.
