i find it wild that america has finally embraced pickleball.

we played it in senior year gym (22 years ago) and i enjoyed it so much that i asked my gym teacher to let me take a few sets of paddles and balls home but i could never get anyone to play.

wish i still had that stuff, it's vintage now

My folks started playing pickleball before the pandemic and I would join sometimes. It was always being played by retired boomers, so much so that most game times were weekday afternoons (when non retired boomers would be working). In the last few years it's exploded so much so that the community centers offer it several times a day with wait-lists, there are outdoor courts replacing tennis courts and it is getting popular with younger non boomer people. Personally I play it over tennis because I had an accident a few years back (don't recommend getting hit by a car) and it's easier on my body (and also I can no longer serve or smash in tennis).

Counterpoint: they shouldn't be easily available because it just gives the killer more exposure, could inspire more people to be like the killer and adds nothing of value to society. It doesn't have anything that the public needs to see or know about.

On that topic when I do go to burger king I default ask for no mayo because that makes the sandwich’s calories drop a heck of a lot. I think the impossible whopper with just the veggies and ketchup is 450 or so calories which isn’t too bad. With its above 700. Fries are still salty as poo poo and a medium fry is almost the same calories as the burger sans mayo.

My lunch isn’t for another 2 hours and I’m hungry now.

I just don’t get drinking to be honest. I know some people who love it and can’t go out on the night without it but with all the bullshit I’ve seen over the years physically (like with these studies) and emotionally I just don’t think I’ll ever get it.

After reading the internet all day at work about how everything sucks and the world is going to end and people are dying and everyone hates everyone, having a nice cold beer with some buddies can really take the edge off.

This is straying a bit into right wing talking points about the insurrectionists. They were absolutely willing to do violence to politicians there and the reason they didn't was that the politicians were under security and the J6ers couldn't get to them. The closest they got was that woman who was shot by security. They went into the building looking for politicians and it was more due to the action of security in the building that they couldn't find any. This is not to say that they didn't want to do violence in the first place.

It might, but ESPN won't have to keep paying fees to cable and if more people "have a cable subscription for sports" than "only watch sports because of the cable subscription," then they will come out ahead. I imagine that is why they are doing it in the first place.

About 56% of people still pay for a cable TV subscription. It's a lot of people. The questions for ESPN are:

- Are the people who watch ESPN just doing it because they have a cable subscription or is it the other way around?
- Is cable going to continue growing and is it worth the exclusivity deals to stay with them?

ESPN seems to think the answer is that they need to start a transition away from cable.

The MLS (which already has a small viewership compared to other major league sports) moved to Apple TV. I can't talk about how it has been received (if you ask the league its been a success, if you ask the fans it has major issues) but the thing with ESPN compared to a league dedicated channel is that at least ESPN has a variety of sports so even though it is yet another annoying subscription streaming service (which is really just becoming cable 2.0 with the amount of streaming services needed now). That being said gently caress everyone trying to get into the streaming game. I am probably paying more now for the various streamers than I ever did for cable.

According to the indictment, Trump's attorneys have been trying to argue that he was not criminally liable because he is delusional, is surrounded by malicious people who had their own motives for misinforming him about the election, and he frequently believes anything that other people tell him.

It's not going to make any difference for the people that support him and most people will probably never hear about it, but it is kind of amazing going into an election year and having one of the candidates arguing in court that they are so delusional, easily tricked, and only hire maliciously incompetent people to such a degree that they are essentially a child or mental incompetent in the legal sense... and you should elect them as President.

Edit: The indictment also literally says one of the main things they intend to prove to the jury is that Trump is not delusional or as dumb as he appears in public statements - that he willingly went along with it and knew he was lying.

I don't know. Maybe saying Trump is a dumb dumb who is too stupid to do bad things might get him to confess on the stand all his crimes. Worked against Sideshow Bob afterall.

Regarding the loneliness thing I was biking around the other day and went by a park and saw a group of maybe 20-30 people playing games and cheering each other on and such and I thought "man I really would like to be doing what they are doing, being out with a whole group of people just having fun" and then I realized that:

a. It was probably a church group and I am not even Christian and I know my synagogue doesn't do things like that
b. None of my friends would ever organize a thing like this. Hell, some of my friends became complete shut ins during covid and have had to resort to therapy to gain the confidence to leave the house and be around people again.

I used to organize a softball team in a rec league years ago before covid but I decided it was time to let someone else do the organizing and the whole thing fell apart because no-one else wanted to organize. It became a thing where I felt that the only way I would get to see people or do fun things is if I was the one making the effort to reach out and do something and it just got so tiresome after a while that the last year I just gave up on keeping in touch with people. I wouldn't say my friends are lazy (well they are) but it definitely feels like people are caught up in their own stuff and don't make time for socializing anymore, and to try do so feels like way more effort and stress than it is worth.

The only way you can hope for someone who agrees with 100% of the things you want is if you personally run for position and hope people vote for you. Saying x candidate only agrees with 80% of the things I like so I won't vote for them and having the candidate who only agrees 30% of the things you like win is not a great position to be in. An important mechanic here - looking specifically at the post you screenshotted - is that early in the morning of Oct 7, it wasn't yet clear that Hamas had killed/was killing a ton of civilians. Here's the experience of learning the news as described by a rabbi I know, who went from "love to see it" to "disgusted to see it":
