My real name is incredibly generic, and I love it dearly for the relative invisibility that grants.

I also use a pet form, and it irritates me when I tell someone my name and they "correct" me. It's a very good litmus test to see who is an rear end in a top hat or not.

However, I have had my username for twenty four years on some place or another. It's as much a part of my identity as anything, and my internal monologue refers to me as "VSM", rather than my real name, take of that what you will.

In the off, off chance I ever undertake a creative endeavor, my generic name will be a liability, so I intend to use a pseudonym with the VSM abbreviation.

my SA username I'm not terribly attached to. temped to change it to match my avatar or something.

my other username i use most places (well, a short version of it) basically feels like my real name, in my head. it's what I am most used to be referred to by, I guess? most of my socializing is online.

my legal first name is an unusual spelling of a slightly uncommon biblical name, I think. my last name is 13 fuckin characters long. anytime I need to give a receptionist or whoever my name, I just hand em my ID. easier on both of us. so ultimately not really a big fan. I hear my name spoken out loud so rarely that sometimes I forget it's referring to me.

while we're at it, how do y'all feel about the voice in your skull vs your voice via recording? my skull voice seems a lot better to me. when will they invent skull microphones?

Mine is way higher pitched than I hear it. I sound like a ditzy child, but it makes customer service calls more friendly. Maybe a little more condescending, but ultimately helpful.

I do wonder how deep people with already deep voices hear themselves. What the gently caress is Patrick Page's inner voice like?!

I have a really deep voice, I actually perceive it as higher pitched than it really is. I'll be thinking I'm sounding normal and people who don't know me will tell me to "feel better soon" because they think I'm sick from my voice being deep and gravelly. I dunno how it is for other people, but it resonates a lot in my head, I get headaches really quickly if I yell.

And it's funny you mention the customer service thing because no matter how much I try to pitch my voice up and sound obsequious people will always think I'm being aggressive or an rear end in a top hat. There's two sides to it basically, if people are just speaking to you on regular terms, they typically find a deep voice attractive, or if you're in a position of authority it makes people listen to you more even if you have no loving clue what you're talking about, people immediately are more likely to believe you even if you say dumb poo poo; but then there are situations where people will hate you for it, so retail was just absolute garbage. Dudes would come up to the counter and pitch their voice lower (I'm gonna be generous and say I think probably subconsciously) to match my register, immediately after they said hi with a much higher, regular tone lol, and old ladies would always think I was being rude. Generally younger women didn't seem to have an issue with it, but everyone else it was a completely mixed bag.

The fact that I have a southern accent is of course a double whammy lmfao. I think the worst part of having a deep voice though is that people don't hear you in loud places or if there are a lot of people talking at once. It's surprising because you think that free projection you get from having a booming voice would make it easier for people to hear you, but your bass rumble just blends into people's conversations and they'll talk over you without even noticing.

Interesting! I'd like to know exactly how the reverb works; I've always heard the pitch is lower inside your head, so it's cool to hear that's not actually the case. I got questions!

The bit about dudes trying to match your voice is hilarious. I also have what I call a "room temperature" voice, so I wonder if there isn't a frequency for each register that just gets swallowed by a room? The worst is when someone repeats something you said, louder, and gets a response but doesn't credit you.

And Southern accent buddy. :(:hf::(

I'm prob a weird case with pitch because I have a prosthetic in the inner ear of my right ear and the hearing in that ear is funky asf.
