It’s interesting to see all this stuff coming together right now. Just last week 18 German Leopard 2 tanks and 40 Marder IFVs were handed over (so a mechanized battalion). It really seems like any time now a Ukrainian offensive using massed Western equipment can be attempted.

The results of that will quickly show if Ukraine has a realistic chance in 2023 of making large gains like during the Kharkiv offensive or only slow slugging offensives like in Kherson.

As a counterpoint these are probably newer recruits using battle systems that haven’t been used by Ukraine before and may not be available in great enough numbers to make a noticeable difference, so the ability of Russia to withstand an offensive is likely to be the real deciding factor.

We got a lot closer to Clancychat than was admitted or reported at the time. Remember that British surveillance plane that had a missile fired near it?

Yeah it wasn't an accident. It was intentional. The pilot misinterpreted what ground radar operators told him and he thought he had permission to fire. The missile was locked on and targeted correctly and the only thing that averted likely nuclear escalation is that the missile malfunctioned and failed to fire properly.

Phew.

The nukes aren’t hard wired to go off anytime a NATO jet explodes.

The discussion was on defending sides in the war entering the attacker's territory. Certainly, the Allies did that to Germany and other European Axis members. That did not make France and UK non-defenders (USSR was a bit more complicated, but was still 199% morally justified in taking Berlin).

Yea which is why Vietnam famously invaded the US to win the war, same with Afghanistan and their various wars.

Turns out different wars have different details!

Must be a stop on his way to Japan, they announced he's going to attend the G-7 in person.

He’s gotta go that way anyway, it’s not like he’s flying over Russia to get there.

There’s not a lot of great options for a diplomatic visit on that route either. Where else do you stop? Turkey? Iraq? India? Pakistan?

This incursion is a big flashy distraction that Russia has to respond to with troops / resources, and it also has the nice side effect of making the regime look weak internally. My guess is they wait for the tanks to show up and then duck back into Ukraine. Russia has correctly determined that Ukraine won’t invade them but it looks like Ukraine has found a way to still force Russia to babysit the border.

Also no one’s gonna rise up and take cities over this but it may encourage further small scale sabotage and resistance.

If Russian backed “separatists” came across the US / Mexico border and captured a few American towns and crowed about starting the reconquista it would be embarrassing as gently caress for any US President so I’m not sure how the Russian equivalent could be spun positively domestically.
