honestly it all sounds good so I'm just along for the ride, although I think the hero should be named Ableton Live Suite 9.0, because its such an amazing product and helps me do all my recording and create some truly incredible music.

This post has been paid for by Ableton Live Suite 9.0

finding Damor should be our highest priority. We must build up a legendary and honorable reputation, which we can then cynically use as leverage to rob the town blind.

As for the royalists, nobles in my experience have a lot more gold (or shards) to be pried out of their anemic claws, so I'd gravitate toward situations that get us within swiping distance of the heir's pockets, and worm our way into his good graces.

This. Also as a bard we need to find the most annoying instrument known to man to get people to pay us to stop playing, like a busker

OK, so we'll head to the temple of Nagil (I do remember seeing that in the city description, earlier - plus they're a pretty major god, so most places should have one of his/its temples) and then head for Damor's last known position, after seeing if there's a temple dedicated to Sig nearby.
Just to check though, if there isn't a temple of Sig in the city, should we take the direct route to Damor, or take a detour to Yellowport on the way? Since if there's no temple of Sig in Marlock City, Yellowport would be the next likeliest place, I would imagine.

Also yeah, instruments are good - they typically provide buffs to charisma, too. Unfortunately there haven't been anything available in the markets so far. (From what I remember after all these years, there are various flutes available ingame, as well as some other things like lutes or mandolins. Some other stuff too here and there, IIRC)

Take the detour, we have time I would imagine

Yeah, it was a painful decision to play the long game and not just reach for the guy's purse for some more cash, but Abe's already probably on thin ice with the guard (at least, the ones he beat up :v: ) so it's probably better for him to maintain the illusion of benevolence, for the time being. Hopefully this weird powder stuff will actually be useful - if so, it might even be better than the cash the guy had on him

I hope so too, only one way to see lol

Looks like scouting is winning out, atm! One more question though: which way should Ableton travel, to reach the mountains said to be Damor's home? Follow the road on a slight detour notlrth east along the forts, or go cross country?

Lets follow the road IMO

OK, so one of the two books that arrived covers Sokara, the region we're in. So I've added some scans to most of the posts - other than the very early ones in Golnir, anyway. (Hopefully that book will arrive on Monday, but we'll see)
While I was adding the images, I also noticed that we were asked to go into the Scorpion Bight to recover an artifact for one of the city temple's priests. I'll add that to the OP in a minute, but obviously it's very low priority - only something to do if we go down that way, anyway

Also, the garrison unfortunately don't have any extra gear to provide. Ableton will be able to receive some specialist training however, if he succeeds in his mission

nice! the books finally came lol! and good luck to Ableton!

Figuring he might as well stop off by the local slavers in the morning before heading south, Ableton walks over and wanders around slave market - which is a large, canvas-covered square. The poor downtrodden slaves consist of people from all over Harkuna - people from the Feathered Lands, Golnir, criminals of Sokara, nomads from the steppes, are all paraded in chains on a dais.
Merchants and nobles bid for the slaves they want. An unusual sale has just come up, which piques Ableton's interest - a little, furry, bat-winged humanoid. It is one of the Mannekyn People from Sky Mountain in the north and it is going for 50 Shards.

Deciding to buy the fellow on a whim, Ableton hands over the shards and is handed its leash. Before he can get far however, a fancy sedan chair being carted around by four burly men cuts him off, before being set down. The man sitting on the chair then leans over and yells at Ableton with a glower. "Eurgh, you there! I’ve come to buy that flying monkey but I see I am too late. Nevertheless, I will give you 75 Shards for it."
Looking down at the pathetic-looking creature, Ableton sees the look of fear in its big eyes. "Please, don’t sell me to that popinjay - free me instead," chitters the Mannekyn. Ableton, admittedly somewhat moved by the poor creature's plight, refuses the man's offer. (He was awfully rude, anyway...) Instead, he and the Mannekyn walk out of the covered square and Ableton sets the creature free.
"I figured you'd be more trouble than what you're worth anyway," Ableton gruffly mutters to the creature, trying not to look like a big softie as he unties its bonds. "Thank you, large one!" it chatters, "My name is Pikalik the Wing-warrior! We never forget - one day I will repay my debt." With that, he (and the 50 shards he represents) flitters away into the clouds.

Seeing nothing else of interest at the markets, Ableton heads out of Caran Baru and towards the Coldbleak mountains to the south-east.
Upon arriving at the base of the Coldbleak Mountains after an uneventful walk, Ableton sees that they look about as inhospitable and forbidding as their name implies. Their frozen flanks climbing high into the icy clouds.
Pushing aside thoughts about whether or not helping the local monarchy is worth the trouble, Ableton gets to work hiking up the mountain range. It's an arduous walk, but eventually Ableton reaches a narrow mountain track, which makes his progress easier.
After some more walking along the track however, a man steps out from concealment a short distance in front of Ableton. He is clearly a soldier, but his uniform is rough and ready - as if he had been living in the wild for some time. The soldier gives Ableton a look-over, before signaling that he wants to parley.
"Who is the rightful ruler of Sokara – General Grieve Marlock, or the son of the old king, Nergan Corin?" The soldier asks, warily. Knowing full well that this is very much a loaded question and there are no doubt more soldiers about, Ableton puffs up his chest and dutifully reples, "why, Nergan Corin of course!"
"That is good response, for your sake," says the soldier with a smile. Several archers then stand up from their hiding places behind the rocks overhead. Another soldier, a captain, walks over to Live and introduces himself as Captain Vorkung.
He is a member of the old aristocracy; the nobles loyal to the king and the old regime, before General Marlock seized power and executed the old king.

"I'm glad that we have a friend in you, traveler. But this isn't the place for someone like you to be walking around. Leave the mountains immediately - it's a dangerous place," Vorkung orders with a stern gaze.
At this, Ableton spends the next few minutes explaining that, to the contrary, this is the perfect place for him - working alongside the loyalists! Aiding the rightful king of Sokara!
After listening for a while, it's clear that Captain Vorkung is rather impressed Ableton's claims of loyalty to the rightful king. After speaking to another soldier briefly, he declares that Ableton might be useful to their cause after all - so he's blindfolded and led through a secret pass to a mountain stockade.
Once his blindfold has been removed, Ableton looks around and sees that he's in a makeshift throne room - with King Nergan, no less! He is a young, and handsome man, who seems committed to his country. He leads Ableton aside, into a private chamber.
"I have need of one such as you," he says in a serious tone. "Yellowport groans under the yoke of Governor Marloes Marlock, the brother of General Grieve Marlock. If you can get into the palace at Yellowport and assassinate Marloes, I will be eternally grateful! You will then of course be rewarded, in turn. With shards, fame and a title."

Is this enough to entice Ableton into a dangerous mission to help the rebels come one step closer to retaking their kingdom? Or is this too risky for our hero?

Ableton should take the risk. He seems like a man who would love fame.

Yeah, it's pretty good! You're also very busy with IZWF though, so I'm not surprised haha

Anyway, well, seeing as all the books have arrived I've transitioned from the old incomplete java app to P&P, as per my original plan.

However, in the process I feel I have done something... unspeakable... Something that I fear my image as a middle-of-the-road non-descript poster will never recover from, after I worked so hard to cultivate it. Since in order to aid my future endeavours, I did something I previously thought I'd kill myself before considering:

I purchased a clipboard. A CLIPBOARD. The price tag only said $2.75 AUD, but I swear I left the store lighter - as though I had left some of my dignity behind, the moment I picked up that clipboard from the shelf...
:negative:

It's not too bad though, aside from the fact that I paid for it, and that it's a clipboard. It's definitely handy to have, even if it makes me think my midlife crisis came a decade or two early - and that it's an incredibly boring midlife crisis, at that! Rather than splurging on a new sports car, or something else that's far more glamorous than this :D

It could be worse Major, your midlife crisis could have you posting for weeks on end about Posting Integrity! A clipboard isn’t so bad… unless you got one of those bookie visors from the 1920s and then I guess I’d see you in the gambling Megathread

hahaha funny you say that! Since I actually told my partner around half an hour ago, that me buying one of those bookie visors was the next logical step from this - with slacks and suspenders being the point where she should smother me in my sleep :v:
(On the plus side, if I do ever reach that stage and die, you can at least hook ChatGPT up to my account and have it roleplay as me, like in Bolvekur's thread! Nobody would notice the difference, haha)

lmfao great minds my friend

Assuming nothing goes wrong during the escape, what should Ableton do? I can't confirm right now, but I believe there's a bank in this city, where he could deposit (and/or invest) some of his money for safe-keeping. Otherwise, he could just hang onto it and explore the steppes to the west, or spend a few hundred or so on a small house (which carries the risk of burglary, so it's technically not as good/safe as his sewer hideout in Yellowport), or even buy a ship and go sailing, etc.

I think he should buy a ship, and see what life is like out on the ocean

Alright, I'll check the harbour out later, all going well. Yarimura is a pretty big city, so hopefully they stock the full range of ships.

One question though: The ship name. Does anyone have a good, ship-worthy name for our future vessel? After giving it some thought I've got a potential name (or a placeholder until a better one is thought up, by someone) that fits with the audio software TLD started, with Ableton's name: The Audacity, named after the audio editing tool I use! :D
