One of the best "little" scenes in the movie is Neil staring up at the nightvision camera Pacino's crew is using in the metal depository sting as if he knows it there, it looks like he's got dead eyes and that whole scene is great.

yeah and he also continues the theme in Collateral. which is just as good as Heat imo

Hmm maybe, my takeaway was this gang was fine with letting off hundred of rounds in a city with no regard for human life & had executed the armored car guards, could reasonably assume the girl’s survival would be in doubt if Sizemore were allowed to leave. Pacino also knew there were many wounded cops on the scene and probably wanted to end it as soon as possible so EMTs could move in.

yea he even calls the crew out for being ruthless killers, saying as soon as the first armored car robbery crime-level evolved to a murder beef for the whole crew they did not hesitate to kill the witnesses

There's a video on YouTube of the training Tom Cruise went through for that movie, it's funny because he still has his long hair from "The Last Samurai". He put in the work though, for sure.

its kinda funny to think that Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves have undergone enough training in their careers that they could totally gently caress up 99% of people if they wanted to

Sometimes people complain that the guy on the right would've gotten his gun out way quicker but I bet that's a pretty accurate recreation of what would happen irl especially if you just saw your buddy catch two in the chest. I also like the detail of Cruise pushing the first guy's arm across his body to make it more awkward to recover, and to also ensure that he wouldn't get hit if the guy did manage to get a shot off. Even when Cruise raises his hands, his draw hand is slightly lower to make pulling his gun easier. So many great little details packed into one scene.

you also have to remember that basically every dude like that is loving dumb and they probably aren't the kinds of guys who set up ranges to practice on so yea it's probably exactly what would happen if a highly-trained dude went up against a couple dopey bangers like that lmao

i still remember being so awed by that scene the first time i saw Cruise pop those dudes so quick, one of my all-time favorite movie moments

also the nightclub scene is one of the best shootouts, the moves Cruise pulls are so drat tight, like when he rolls over and fires between his knees before twisting himself upright and firing again, all in like 5 seconds

haha i forgot about the chunky FBI agent who gets shot, his "ah come on" look always cracks me up

Mann's style really comes through in the novel if that makes sense. It's a very lean and pretty nasty read but very very enjoyable and I reread it a few months after finishing it.

It's a fun book but I have no idea why Mann went with an Uber-Waingro for the villain, he wasn't horribly written or anything but there are million other types of bad guys so it didn't seem particularly original to go with "extremely sadistic criminal" again.

Miami Vice was fun but it's definitely Michael Mann capitalizing on his appeal to insufferable gun dweebs. Collateral was that as well; the kind of movie for twiggy engineers who watch ballistic gel videos and fantasize about using their CCWs, but MV played that hand a little too hard with the scene where the one SWAT member describes how she's going to shoot the hostage taker in the brainstem instead of just doing it.

They're all very fun movies, but beware anyone who likes them a little too much.

Mark Ruffalo??? Or are you talking about someone else?

My favourite part about the nightclub scene in Collateral (other than the tactical gun dweeb poo poo) is that the song playing is Ready, Steady, Go by Paul Oakenfold, but someone in the music direction department asked that they change the titular vocal sample to Korean(?) to better fit the scene. It's the same song used in the car chase scene in The Bourne Identity.

Not Ruffalo, but him getting iced so matter-of-factly is a great moment too

I'm talking about the fbi guy who gets shot a few seconds after where I've linked here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlFwTw0Z6nM&t=107s

Rewatched Collateral the other day, still holds up great with peak Foxx & Cruise. It’s great on rewatches to pick up on how Cruise’s hitman is talented but makes a lot of mistakes like on the first hit where he has the element of surprise, botches it so body goes out the window & Foxx is alerted.

It was fascinating too to realize Cruise’s plan kinda makes sense and there is mention it worked in another city, but how weird it is that he sticks to riding in the cab even after Foxx knows what is going on, and they address that in how Cruise has problems adapting to his detriment. Like how going face to face with the jazz club owner did work but that’s a stupid plan for the Korean nightclub & while it works he comes super close to being killed.

One minor quibble is the ending doesn’t quite keep up the atmosphere & energy. They’re out of the cab & mostly running around an empty building not talking to each other, not a dealbreaker & but Jada Pinkett Smith doesn’t have much to do than be the damsel in distress

It's why he gets killed by Foxx at the end: Cruise's muscle-memory is to shoot the middle of the targets torso and his shots hit the middle of the subway door, while Foxx shoots kinda wild and manages to hit him.

I think Blackhat is actually okay. People pan it because the hacker is sexy but I knew plenty of computer dudes who went to the gym. Also it had good shootouts and that scene at the end where that dude got stabbed up loving rules.

As an aside I think the bad guy in Blackhat is kinda based on Paul Le Roux and his story is loving wild, I think Mann was actually interested in producing a movie about him too.

Maybe I'll rewatch Miami Vice tonight. I saw it in theatres when I was a huge gun nut/armchair general and I remember it getting my rocks off with all the Michael Mann gun porn but I feel like rewatching it today it might all be a little cringe. The scene where the female SWAT member describes how she's going to shoot the hostage taker before he can trigger the explosive in particular was a bit hamfisted; SWAT operators don't do that, they just loving shoot you. And doesn't the climactic gun battle end with Colin Farrell literally doing a backflip whilst firing a shotgun? That's not in the training.

As an aside though, Farrell is a loving excellent actor. I just rewatched Minority Report last night; he legit stole the show in that one (not an easy task with that stacked cast).

Good Time was legit one of the most stressful movies I've ever seen in theatres. We were supposed to go see a Star War, but ended up going into this movie blind and it was such a good decision. The scene where they dose the guy with WAY too much acid had us screaming in our seats, and Connie hitting on the underage girl was so skeevy. I mean, the whole movie is a clinic "am I supposed to like this rear end in a top hat? He sucks." Excellent casting, costume design and makeup too - everyone in that movie just looks so fuckin' greasy.

The scene where that dude falls off the building freaked me the gently caress out, I have a major fear of heights, but not like... a normal one, I'm actually terrified of other people falling and I felt literally sick when that dude fell.

Uncut Gems is another extremely stressful movie. I liked it but I'll probably never watch it again.
