CHaKKaWaKka posted:I really liked the book, but Al Pacino ruined it for me by suggesting that Timothée Chalamet should play a young version of him and I couldn't stop cracking up imagining Timmy as a grizzled Chicago detective Timmy all jacked up on amphetamines using a shotgun to ambush home invaders might be hilarious to see on film though

ChickenHeart posted:It's literally all about getting down fundamentals and then tedious amounts of practice. I never touched a firearm until I joined the military, then could barely shoot for beans until I took a 2-week tactical shooting course and did drills for months after that. At the height of my proficiency I could reliably land hits on a man-sized target at 25+ yards while moving, which was pretty cool. The amount of time I have spent doing dry fire and just weapon manipulations to get to a point where I am merely "ok" is insane. It's probably close to a 100 hours so far

haljordan posted:Easily my favorite movie soundtrack by a wiiiiiiide margin. Also Wes Studi kills it in everything (including Heat lmao) His story about how he got cast in Heat is great. (he literally called up Michael Mann and thanked him for casting him and started talking about his ideas for his character and Mann just was like well I guess you are in it) He also made Daniel Day Lewis sign an autograph for him using his left foot

Extra Large Marge posted:"Public Enemies" wasn't one of his best films by any means, however part of it was was shot at one of my favorite restaurants in the Wisconsin Dells (and the surrounding Mirror Lake State Park). I honestly really like Public Enemies and I always forget it's a Michael Mann movie. The soundtrack is great

Also the final shootout rules. Those long shots from each sides perspective with the distant muzzle flashes and the sound of the impacts/the crack of rounds going close by is so good.

Earwicker posted:when is the last time someone made a crime thriller as good as Heat or Collateral? I really liked Riders of Justice, it's a Danish film starting Mads Mikklelsen about a soldier who goes on a revenge spree after his wife dies. It's a very very dark film. Small Town Crime with John Hawkes is also a recent crime film I liked.

Extra Large Marge posted:"The Place Beyond the Pines" is good too. Well, the beginning of it at least if you're only looking for heist movies. My wife grew up in Schenectady so we watch that movie every couple years. The first part is very very good but it starts dragging near the end

Wrath of Man is one of my favorite movies from the past five years and I am pretty embarrassed by it. I know objectively it's not a "good" movie but I just really enjoy it.

Mister Speaker posted:Maybe I'll rewatch Miami Vice tonight. I saw it in theatres when I was a huge gun nut/armchair general and I remember it getting my rocks off with all the Michael Mann gun porn but I feel like rewatching it today it might all be a little cringe. The scene where the female SWAT member describes how she's going to shoot the hostage taker before he can trigger the explosive in particular was a bit hamfisted; SWAT operators don't do that, they just loving shoot you. And doesn't the climactic gun battle end with Colin Farrell literally doing a backflip whilst firing a shotgun? That's not in the training. It's a throwback to the TV show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSgyxIGl_Og Also in the clip is some fantastic 80s pistol tactics. My personal favorite is sticking the mag in your mouth while doing a tac reload

Rinkles posted:Was that lingering shot of Yero seething with jealousy as a teardrop rolls down his cheek intended to be so hilariously melodramatic? The movie has a few moments like that, that I started to think Mann was intentionally leaning into camp. I think he was leaning into it. The movie is filled with little moments like that. The scene with John Hawkes on the highway is over the top melodrama as well

deep dish peat moss posted:He literally hops around like a chimpanzee in a squat holding his gun one-handed while waving his other hand around and it's hilarious. It's really really bad and he moves like a moron while clearing

BitBasher posted:If I recall what actually saved Max was that Vincent's muscle memory hosed him. IIRC Vincent Drew and shot first but put his rounds into the steel door aiming for center mass out of reflex, Max returned fire and got some shots through the off center glass windows shooting wild at extremely close range. Yeah it's this, Jamie Foxx is firing wildly with one hand while Cruise does a near perfect failure drill that he had done several times previously. I think it fits perfectly with the tone/themes of the movie personally. Training scars are absolutely a thing with firearms, even highly trained shooters end up falling back onto trained patterns during stressful encounters and some guy that has trained a failure drill thousands of times will revert to that during an adrenaline dump. Also I think I am like the one person that loved Miami Vice
