Do it. The thread demands it!

No seriously, it's only one run so far; that's really disappointing for what is explicitly intended as a megathread.

(Side note: If I had a microphone I might've contributed an FFMQ run by now; that's kind of my latest fascination.)

In theory there's nothing stopping you from doing a SSLP instead, as long as you're OK with losing the live reaction aspect! :justpost: imo

I'm going to be running through FF6 Beyond Chaos (not the open world one, that's Worlds Collide, so most of the terminology in the OP won't apply here). There's a twist though. See, the way I look at it, the appeal of randomizers is twofold. Obviously there's the inherent replayability aspect; every run is different and you never know quite what to expect. Every once in a while, though, you luck into an individual seed that's really firing on all cylinders, so much so that it manages to become a memorable experience in its own right. That's the feeling I'd like to try and tap into with this LP. How? Simple. I've already played this seed *checks notes* ...six years ago. I remember some things, but there's still plenty of room for the game to catch me off guard. And the fact that I remember anything at all should attest to the fact that this seed was a wild ride, and absolutely worth showing off. In the back of my head I've always kind of wanted to revisit it in an LP, and this thread is as good an excuse as I'm ever going to get. So, without further ado:

Let's (Re)play An FF6 Beyond Chaos Seed!

Part 1: My Special Power Is Exploding

The seed is 1488594335, if you're curious, and I'm pretty sure I left all the flags on. Huge caveat, though: obviously this ROM was generated using a very old version of the randomizer, so I can't guarantee that feeding that seed into the current version will produce the same results, especially since I'm sure there are more flags now then there were then. If you want to try and track it down, it was version 62 of Beyond Chaos (NOT EX). From a little cursory digging, it looks like this was very nearly the last version before switching to a different developer and becoming Beyond Chaos EX.

I never really got into FF6BC, personally, but that's not an argument against it; I've played and enjoyed FF6 before, so by all rights I should like Beyond Chaos- I just... can't play it for some reason. Maybe I've just gotten too used to open-world randomizers.

Totally fair! They definitely scratch slightly different itches. I think I'm kind of the opposite, at least when it comes to RPGs (the thread's definitely tempting me to get back into LTTP rando though). It's cool that there's enough design space in the genre for both styles of randomizer to coexist!

FF6 Beyond Chaos: Part 2: Casino Thamasa And The Worst Viking

Huh, weird, I went to open up my Beyond Chaos run, and all the sprites and enemy names weren't randomized anymore. I'm guessing what happened is that back at the start I opened up the randomizer briefly to make sure I was giving correct information about my settings, and I had it start running but didn't let it finish. I hadn't exited out of the emulator since then until just now, so probably the ROM got all hosed up the next time I loaded it. Taking another full pass with the randomizer seems to have fixed it, so hopefully I haven't caused any permanent damage.

It wasn't a full heal TBF, I think it only took me one or two more attacks to finish him off the second time.

No, actually, you're just looking too far to the west; Sabin's house is in that... alcove in the center, not in the Figaro Cave section or next to Mt. Koltz. Like, basically look directly north of South Figaro (Figaro Cave being northwest and Koltz being northeast), and you should be pretty close.

...gently caress. Now that you say something I can picture it clearly, too. Not sure what was wrong with my brain while I was playing, between that and not bothering to save.

Oh yeah, the start of the WoR is going to be suitably *magical*, don't you worry.

You've apparently got some XCom in your randomizer seed because that remaining 10% hit. It does randomize them or at least it did in our LP.

That 90% was absolutely just me talking out my rear end, so I'm not remotely surprised to find out I was wrong. :v: Still feel good about my decision to open them, though; the potential to luck into something ahead of the curve early on outweighs any other factors imo.

I actually did drop one in front of that trapped chest at the beginning, because I realized I hadn't saved since leaving Zozo and didn't feel like walking all the way back out of Narshe and then back in again. There might have been another one somewhere else too? I forget. But yeah, generally I try to keep myself honest. Honestly, save states wouldn't have helped all that much anyway; that first trip into the factory was doomed the second I walked in.

E: If there's ever a boss that's obnoxiously far away from the nearest save point I'll probably use one, but FF6 is usually pretty good about that sort of thing, and aggressively save stating after every random encounter and before opening every chest sounds incredibly tedious.

FF6 Beyond Chaos: Part 7: Bosses? Where We're Going We Don't Need Bosses

Bit of a shorter update this time to balance out the last one, though it still ended up slightly longer than I was expecting.

Also, unless the randomizer shuffled it off, Flame Eater has MP = 0 death, so you could probably have just walked away and let it burn himself out.

As for this, I guess it'd depend on how much MP it actually has and how often flare comes up. There's also the matter of the hazils; regen probably keeps up with their physicals, just about, but it's possible they eventually start doing something more dangerous if left alive and I've never seen it because, well, you know. :v:

Also a totally valid direction to take things in, and more directly supported by the text to boot! I imagine that is at least a little bit what they were actually going for, but bringing the esper stuff into it just muddies the issue unnecessarily. Frankly it's a wonder Terra is as well adjusted as she is, considering how little time she's had to develop a personality.

In no particular order, my priorities are going to be:

Rei (Terra's slot): Has X-Magic
Iria (Shadow's slot): Has Lore, doggo
Koharu (Mog's slot): Has Capture
Gilga (Gau's slot): Has Steal, cracked base stats, can equip basically all the best poo poo

Everyone else that isn't named Hideki is varying degrees of mediocre to "has a Magic command."
