The Last Call posted:Trying to get rid of all things NSFW? The reason Imgur is removing it's NSFW content is defiantly due to FOSTA-SESTA. US Laws that are supposed to fight human trafficking and cp, but in reality are extreme censorship laws designed to remove porn from the internet. These laws make any site liable for whatever illegal content users upload, which is a massive breach of internet sites' safe harbor rules. These laws are also retroactive meaning any content that was ever uploaded to Imgur could make them liable, which is loving insane. The EFF and The Woodhull Foundation are fighting these laws if you'd like to make a donation to them.

imgur used to have a kind of nice, wholesome community in the comments section. lots of low effort/low hanging fruit type comments sure, but at least it was fairly pleasant and a good way to piss away a few minutes. then in 2021 they got bought out by MediaLab, "a holding company of internet brands," and almost immediately became an ad-blasted hellscape which the community abandoned anyway it makes me sad to see how lovely it has become, so i'm going to sit here and yell at clouds about it

Is the right move here to build a bot that mirrors only the images that are referenced in SA posts? I was seeing in other threads that it wouldn't be feasible to get the whole thing, but also separately that trying to do so could end up scraping materials that are illegal

the last few image heavy threads I did I used an imgur account to host things I drew so I'm assuming those will be ok, not that it would be much of a loss to lose those, but pretty much all of my old threads that were using images hosted on waffleimages or tinypic are unreadable now. i remember toward the end of tinypic some of my images had inexplicably changed to seemingly random pictures with one being a massive dong.

the way i see it, it's just about possible that SA's hotlinked images are fine on the new policy, but that's relying on the goodwill of coked up techbros so we are going to proceed as though they're going to be deleted as soon as the new policy comes in.
