I was terminally online through the 90s and was mostly cut off from the world and internet from 2000-2004 and I think what happened here will be of intense interest to people in the future who will be born into online culture but were never around for all your base. It is really a shame so many of the historical threads here are really hard to find and basically hosed if you do. I really enjoy reading about online stuff from the times I missed out on and am alarmed by how much of what was major online culture of the 70s, 80s, and 90s seems totally erased from the net unless it got picked up by Encyclopedia Dramatica, textfiles.org, or archive.org. It’s very alarming that archive.org is in trouble. It’s collection of garbage 90s cdroms is probably the last remaining records of much of 70s-90s online/computer culture and nerd history that has now blown up and integrated into the lives of normal people. It’s not of much interest now but eventually people will mine that poo poo and want to see what 13 year old basement nerds were up to before they were born. Oh and don’t get me going on Google’s stewardship of its’ usenet archives.

As much as FOSTA-SESTA has had an impact (mostly on online sex workers) and is a bad law, it's really not the reason that various sites keep getting rid of user-uploaded, unverified porn. There's plenty of problematic poo poo associated with it and business reasons to ditch it. For a site like imgur or tumblr, all that NWS content adds cost (hosting, moderation, legal) and generates minimal revenue. Disney & mcdonalds don't want to advertise over porn. It's great for driving growth, terrible for making money. Thus the repeated cycle of site starts up with an anything-goes content policy, gets big, sells itself, then new owners get rid of porn. (And then the userbase decamps for a new anything-goes site.)
