WA state governor Jay Inslee not going to seek fourth term. I thought he was doing a fine job, not perfect but competent & solid on environment. GOP ran a nobody in 2020 who got trounced, but I’m always worried a weak Dem and not obviously insane GOP candidate in a red year nationally could make WA the next Wisconsin, came awful close in 2004 by like 200 votes.

If the GOP was going to take the seat it would be after Inslee's lock down mandates, even the new assault rifle ban isn't going to piss the chuds off as much as that.

I'm still a little salty about them shuttering all the State Parks during that period.

Can crypto just loving die already?

I mean, the last year has been really funny with the idiots losing the money and going to jail and whatnot, but that's a really easily erasable carbon cost right there.

But also, speaking of recruitment:

Since MHS Genesis pulls almost all your medical records, you can't lie about and hide all your medical poo poo from MEPS anymore. Seems like a good thing on the surface, except now late millennials and Gen Z are getting completely hosed since they're generally more likely to have seen a doctor or therapist when they needed help, as opposed to the rest of us who largely got told to just tough it out. Genesis will spit out a huge list of poo poo that MEPS will want waivers for, and then when people come back from their doctors, MEPS will look at a vague or unclear statement the doctor wrote and send the recruit back to get clarification on that.

I've got a bunch of friends who either recently entered or are in the process of going into the service bands, and seeing the hoops they've had to jump through and how many times they've bounced back and forth from primary care and specialists to MEPS has been insane. Most of the bands are now requiring people to contact a recruiter and go to MEPS first before even showing up at an audition, just because it can take 6 months to a year to get some of these people in.

The solution would be revise the list of disqualifying conditions, but lol at them actually doing that. gently caress you if you've ever gotten help as a civilian, but once you're in we want to to get help (but gently caress you if you actually go get help).

Holy poo poo, never thought the DoD would be stupid enough to pierce that particular veil. Me, and almost all my friends in the Navy that I talked to about this stuff just lied on our forms about this stuff, like our recruiters told us to. Same with the weed.

This is also going to bias out anyone from the middle class that has access to voluntary medical care.

I'd like to think this will force the services to change their relationship with mental health care and healthcare in general, but I know it somehow won't. Like maybe they'll let asthmatics carry Albuterol on a submarine, instead of saying "don't tell me about that, that's a disqualifying condition" -real words told to me by a real doctor.

I had a dude in my division that would regularly poo poo his pants on the 0300-turnover watch.

Like once a month.

I dunno if it was IBS, the fact that he literally would not eat vegetables (threw a no poo poo temper tantrum because he got lettuce and tomato on his burger once) or if being a worthless racist piece of poo poo makes you just unload in your tighty whities or what.

China doesn’t really seek a war. They seek credible counter-intervention.

A brilliant pull from the United States' old playbook. "Our ship was attacked in this here port, we have no choice but to preserve peace through military means."

FR though, most of China's imperialist ambitions are local, for now, and the main reason they can't act on them is that the West still holds the purse strings on the global economy. China has no desire to become a pariah state again, and their global ambitions are better realized through patience as the West destabilizes itself.

If DeSantis gets the nomination I'm buying a million of those hats and air-dropping them over Texas, anything implying any other State is superior to Texas might be enough to turn the State blue.

Washington already famously stole money earmarked for schools by dumping lotto funds into the general fund to obfuscate what money was going where.

Big fan of taxing the rich, and looking at that law it's pretty well aimed at only big-r Rich folks. And we desperately need more schools in the state.

I'm sure by next year everyone affected will have figured out how to move their assets around to tax shelter from it though, and we'll have a massive budget shortfall.

I'd say less true, the USSR mostly collapsed from internal pressure, the Empire of Japan and Third Reich were crushed out of existence by external pressure.

Hope that dickhead is held criminally and civilly responsible.
