I guess the timescale kinda makes sense when you consider how time compressed this game has been so far. I mean, in about a fortnight you can go from a handful of refugees and a single officer to either turbo-stalin presiding over a massive police state OR the voice of God on earth surrounded by a fawning cult. It doesn’t make much sense, but it does fit with this game’s relationship with linear time.

EDIT: Also, prepare, I guess. I don’t know how much manpower New London actually has, but we really don’t need the guard corps/faithkeepers/hunter aircraft wiping us out. If they even can…

It would help if they let the player fulfill a few orders and get resources in exchange like they promised. Otherwise there's a weird disconnect here.

Yeah they need more build up, otherwise it comes across as too rushed and like NL had no loving clue what to do in any way.

It's really this that's the bizarre part. The scenario doesn't open talking about how we were anything other than just normal citizens selected to go build an outpost to go get needed supplies. And then the town almost immediately starts looking at us contemptuously and treating us like dirt the second we're out of eyesight. Like, there's kind of a few steps missing in this relationship degradation there.

Maybe there was a change in leadership in NL? If the guy we played ended up being replaced with some hardliner, one who WOULD have gone full dictator. That could explain the sudden, and severe shift in how NL is treating it's outposts. It would also explain why they sent the kids early, and changed the supply plan, all dictators end up hoarding food and supplies eventually, it's like a rule in their handbook.

The Personal Diary of Signalman E. Bourchier
OED 13

Well, this last night was eventful, to say the least! The shouting match continued into the small hours of the morning, by which tempers had cooled off enough that most of us agreed to let the clerks pack up and leave with their belongings.

After that, it was right back to the Frostlands with them. One of them must have had time to send an emergency transmission back to New London before they left, because we received a communiqué from the city just a few minutes later.

You treacherous scum. Your outpost is officially disbanded and you all will be tried for treason upon your return. You have three weeks to convince us that you've changed your ways and wish to remain loyal citizens of New London. After that you'll be hauled back in manacles and may God have mercy on your souls.
This was New London speaking. Over and out!

Bollocks

With the communications cut, there is no way for us to walk back from the brink, even if our people cool down and have second thoughts about the whole independence declaration. We can only prepare to confront what we must assume will be a punitive expedition coming from New London.
For this we will need much more manpower and resources than we have, so let's try to find more people in Frostland. Maybe there are other settlements like Hot Springs? It's also worth asking them for help.

I had only just enough time to send a single word in response before the line went dead. The mood among our people is grimly defiant - we will stand against the power of New London, come what may. We are not alone, however - I contacted the Hot Springs, who have assured us that they will stand by us as long as we help them in return.

Outpost 11, greetings. What is it that you wanted to talk about?

We need help against New London

I am sorry to hear that we were the cause of your clash with New London. If you help us, we might be able to support you later in your struggle.
We'd be grateful if you could help us with setting up basic healthcare and building Bunkhouses. We lack manpower and resources to do this by ourselves and we dread that we won't survive another storm.

We will think about it
How can we help you?

We are in dire need of basic facilities. We'd be really grateful if you could improve our healthcare and send people to help. We lack manpower and resources to do this by ourselves and we dread that we won't survive another storm.

Farewell

Harsh words were said, reckless decisions were made, but we can't turn back time. We should now focus on searching Frostland in hopes of finding are other people out there - alone we have no choice against New London. Other than that we just have to wait for their move.

Well, my diary, we are about to live, as it is said, in interesting times. We are now officially a rogue outpost, and nobody here is willing to kowtow to regain our old master's favour. We will need more allies than Hot Springs, as lovely as they are.

Our steel and wood production will now be going towards improving their infrastructure, to better equip them to help us in return. Our scouts, meanwhile, are on the search for more survivor settlements.

Now that New London no longer controls our affairs, many of our people say they feel free for the first time in their lives. True, we lost their guidance and support, but we gained independence. We don't have to do their bidding, ask permission to cook soup. We can pass our own laws and decide what to do.
There's a petition to change the name of our settlement, since we're no longer an outpost. Should we do it?

Now that we know what our future holds, the questions we must answer in the present are these: What will the new name of Outpost 11 be, if any; and what will be the first Law that we pass as an independent settlement?

Endless Mode: Part Ten

Surprise! We're back in Chillville! Every year from December 18th to the 25th you can get a special Christmas event chain in Endless Mode. Let's take a look.

An old man visits you. "Sir, you'd be forgiven if you forgot because of the evacuation and the storm, but I didn't. It's the end of December and in the old days it meant that Christmas is near!", he says.
"The Dark Years were so hard on us that for many young people Christmas became a historical oddity. To preserve the tradition, we could celebrate it with a common meal and presents, but the most important thing is giving people hope that this year will be different."

Your objective, should you choose to accept it: throw a bomb-rear end Christmas party.

You may recall that Chillville never committed to Order or Faith, and so its hope remained perpetually non-existent. I need to get it up to 50% within three days, and so the city is going to go Faith - seems the more appropriate choice.

A little bit of renovation later, and every single person in the city is living within range of a House of Prayer. Along with Evening Prayers and the following events, this will end up getting our hope up to just about 49%.

A young engineer approaches you, visibly upset. He's one of the people who are dead set against the idea of celebrating Christmas.
"Christmas? Bah, humbug! We mustn't let the past weight us down! Every day we struggle to forge the new man who can survive the end of the world. Reviving such sentimental traditions doesn't advance our goal. Let people celebrate in private, but cancel the common meal!"

Calm down, McDuck. There are literally only five people in the entirety of Chillville who still need to work at the Public House, and that's only because Automatons don't have the fine dexterity to make a margarita. We've solved scarcity and capitalism. You can stay home from the party if you want.

A child visits you to ask about the approaching Christmas.
"Sir, my mother said that there will be a big celebration and that we are going to get presents, but other kids laugh at me and say that nobody will give us anything for free. This is the first Christmas of my life - please, tell me that there will be presents!"

You can choose to spend 2, 1 or no wood for every child in the city. There's no reason for me to skimp, but if you get the event chain while you're still getting your city set up you might want to go for the cheaper toys.

We get the Temple built just in time, putting us over the magic hope threshold with mere hours left til the party.

It's one of my favourite looking buildings in the game, but I wish it towered over the regular little chapels a bit more.

Little stars over the Generator twinkle merrily as people leave their homes and gather around it to share a meal and their joy. Kids open their presents and clutch them tightly, still not believing their eyes.
Whatever happens, the memory of this wondrous day will stay with them forever, bringing them hope in hour of need.

:)

We saved Christmas! Now we can build Christmas trees, or upgrade our large public squares with them.

Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and see you in the new year!

The Personal Diary of Signalman E. Bourchier

Well, diary, the vote to rename old Outpost Eleven was nearly too close to call! In the end, the name "New Bastion" came out narrowly ahead, and so I suppose I shall need to change my numbering system to New Bastion Days.

NBD 13

At the same time, the vote for our very first self-determined law showed overwhelming support for Fighting Arenas. Henry was an avid watcher back in New London, though the bouts were never to my taste. I imagine more than a few of the participants will have in mind the New Londoners as they fight.

A red and black flag was hoisted over New Bastion today, a symbol of our freedom from tyranny and oppression.

In recognition of the fact that we are no longer beholden to New London's ridiculous demands, the workers at the Warehouse have had their shift reduced to regular hours.

We said our goodbyes to five companions as they set out for the Hot Springs with supplies in hand. They are to assist our friends there to develop their infrastructure and, should need arise, help defend against retaliation.

The number of ill around camp is rising faster than our medical posts can keep up. Our engineers assure us an infirmary will curtail this trend.

All we found are pieces of metal trapped in a thick layer of ice. It looks like some terrible force shattered a large metal structure here.

Between the scattered elements of the ship's structure we find an engraved nameplate of USS Prometheus. So this is all that remains of one of the dreadnoughts used to found Tesla City.
The Great Storm has buried it under such a thick layer of ice that we have no hope of uncovering it. Perhaps a spring thaw will allow us to get to it some day...

Our scouts have rediscovered the wreck of the Prometheus, and salvaged what few materials were left exposed by the Storm. They are now returning to New Bastion, as the lookouts at the Beacon believe they have spotted a new path through the mountains.

NBD 14

I must say, even with everything that has happened, I slept remarkably well last night. Having a study food supply and no obligations to the bastards at New London has done wonders for my state of mind.

Although we've found warm springs on Frostland previously, this time we have sadly deluded ourselves.

Sunlight is reflected on the surface of the ice, probably due to the temperature gradient in the air. There is nothing to see here.

We see a human settlement surrounded by a wall. Could it be the old colony of exiles from Tesla City?

Last night, the other scout team was met with disappointment followed by immediate excitement. They did not find a lake as hoped for, but instead have located another group of potential allies!

Another piece of good news - the temperature has risen back to -20, as warm as it has been since the foundation of New London. Regardless, preparations are being made for future cold spells by converting our tents to bunkhouses. This is a usage of steel we would not have been able to afford when we were beholden to New London.

There seems to be a significant gap in the mountain range blocking our way.

The scouts stopped by to drop off some supplies before heading up towards the newly discovered High Pass. Hopefully the other side of the mountain range bears undiscovered treasures!

This is definitely the former Exile Colony. It seems it has some new inhabitants.

When we approach the palisade, we notice that the gate is ajar. We enter cautiously and see ourselves surrounded by silhouettes of people wandering aimlessly among the settlement's buildings. They react to our presence only when we try to talk to them.
It seems that these people have lost everyone and everything in the Great Storm, even the will to live. We can try to move them to our outpost, but even if they agree, we will have to escort them.

Some survivors, but unfortunately not all, saw the sense when we proposed to move them back to our outpost. Maybe they can recover over time. They packed their meagre belongings and set off with us.

Rather than the hoped-for settlement of potential allies, all that we found were more survivors - if such they can be called - of Tesla City. The scouts managed to persuade 27 of them to come back to New Bastion with us.

We will use our remaining steel to build three new bunkhouses for them.

Before they arrive, however, we must decide on a new law for New Bastion to adopt - Duelling Law and Public House are our new options.

What Law will we next pass as an independent settlement?
