If you read the prequel novels (lol) the whole vendetta between Atradies and Harkonnen was actually the fault of the Atradies duke getting pissed off and making a dumb decision.

yep. those books are so loving bad but it's kind of funny to see what frank's dumbass son did. he wrote brain sex and a futurama style shiny golden robot dropping a baby out of a tower (i think that's what set the whole jihad off?)

i vaguely remember even dumber poo poo that i've since lost

apparently the baby killer robot also was duncan idahos or something? what the gently caress did you do brian https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duncan_Idaho?useskin=vector#Hunters_of_Dune_and_Sandworms_of_Dune what in the gently caress

quote:

Duncan and the other refugees from Chapterhouse are still on the run from the Unknown Enemy that hunts them. They don't learn until near the end that the Enemy is the revived empire of thinking machines, and the old couple are actually the computer-entity Omnius and the robot Erasmus. In the final confrontation with Omnius, Paul Atreides (brought back as a ghola and with his power of prescience just restored), and then Norma Cenva (the Oracle of Time to the Navigators), both reveal that Duncan is the Ultimate Kwisatz Haderach; not Paul ( who is an "imperfect" Kwisatz Haderach) nor any other Atreides, nor their descendants. Overwhelmed by the unexpected revelations, Duncan decides to unite humanity and the thinking machines—after Cenva permanently removes Omnius from existence—rather than bring about the absolute destruction of intelligent technology for the second time in history.

Assuming the responsibility of mediator between the two sides, and with Erasmus' willing participation (the robot being left as the leader and controlling-force of the thinking machines), Duncan does something similar to Bene-Gesserit Sharing with the robot; possibly along with what seems to be a physical-bonding (similar to what Leto II did with the sandtrout) into something of a human-machine hybrid. Erasmus then voluntarily "dies", while remaining an Other Memory speaking to Duncan. In addition to being the Final Kwisatz Haderach of the humans, Duncan becomes the new evermind of the thinking machines, guiding their joint future.

:bighow: that's so much worse than just the butlerian jihad was. incredible

It's probably a reference to Samuel Butler's Erewhon, which features a society which has technologically regressed. Fun fact, it starts with a journey over a mountain range and some curious whistling from the wind. I presumed it was just to make it seem spooky or whatever but about a decade after I read it I was passing through a little town not too far from where he wrote it one windy night and I have never heard anything like it. So if you are ever in the south island of New Zealand consider stopping in Windwhistle.

How much of frank herbert was in letos weird rants like that one about bisexual women being the best warriors or when he said "Liberal bigots are the ones who trouble me most. I distrust the extremes. Scratch a conservative and you find someone who prefers the past over any future. Scratch a liberal and find a closet aristocrat."? he also wrote a cool nonscifo book about a cheese that makes you immune to marketing

remembering one of the other prequel books where the axolotl tanks were used to create artificial spice but it was bad somehow. also the tanks were just women. was that shocking revelation in the frank novels somewhere or was it something stupid his son invented? i think the latter but it's been a decade since i read the dune books.

Dune just continually finds new ways to be extremely hosed up about women. Just constantly breaking new ground on utterly bizarre misogyny and fetishes.

No no no. The author personally enjoys and endorses every action that takes place in their books. Every character is a self insert. Every murder mystery author is also a secret killer. How could they write about murder if they didn't think it was cool and did it in real life?

Look, just because I devote hundreds of pages to being weird about women doesnt mean I have any hosed up views about women. Those are bad guys, they do bad guy things, including turning women into biological breeding chambers and also getting so good at sex they can enslave men to their twisted will (except for the hero, who is such a sex king he turns it around and enslaves the woman instead!). I'm very normal.

Also, look forward to my next series, where the completely normal heroes go up against the Piss Wizards and their Golden Horde. I'm gonna spend a thousand pages over the course of this ten book epic describing the sights, smells and tastes of Water Magic in pornagraphic detail, but its cool because those are the bad guys. Did I mention I'm super normal?

if you want to avoid weird sex stuff, you can stop there. imo though the six written by frank herbert are all worth reading, god emperor is my favorite book in the series (despite the weird scene where a lady has an orgasm while watching someone climb up a cliff). but after god emperor the weird sex stuff goes into overdrive, the primary antagonists in heretics and chapterhouse are women who are so good at sex it causes men to imprint on them, enslaving them to their will.

also important to know that a seventh book was planned but frank herbert died, so the abrupt and inconclusive end of chapterhouse is not the intended way for the story to end lol. i didnt know that when i first read the books and when i finished chaptherhouse i was like wtf is this poo poo.

The rule I've been told is to dip out immediately once it gets to be too much. Basically it's not gonna get better or less weird so there's no point in trying to push through.
