this thread is for talking about your bad bosses, current or historical, and boss drama. please try to be funny and tell funny stories instead of whining or being weird. no tweets. thank you.

i work for an american megacorp and i recently moved to a new team after a pretty contentious relationship with my last manager. shes very bad at managing people or work flow and does a lot of the classic boss poo poo everyone hates (micromanagement, clumsy personal manipulation, etc.). this culminated in her torpedoing my annual review for very obviously personal reasons, which she included in the documentation(!). i got moved to another team within a week and her other direct reports are starting to get moved as well, so she's obviously being minimized.

i think she's starting to figure out whats happening because she's begun having a very public breakdown. she's crying and yelling at people in meetings and accusing them of being incompetent or malicious, from her own direct reports up to the directors. i found out this morning that earlier this week, she brought her husband - who has never worked for the company - into a manager meeting to defend her from accusations of not aligning with company direction and trying to backseat manage the managers. it has been strongly suggested that she take a few months of leave to get her poo poo together, which she is refusing. on the one hand this is sad because i worked with her a lot before she got promoted and became my boss and we got along pretty well. otoh lmfao

when i used to work the phones in call centers i had a parade of weird or bad bosses such as one who ate hydroxycut 24 hours a day and on days when he came in looking really pissed, its because he pawned a bunch of poo poo the night before to finance his gambling addiction. this happened a couple times a month and would lead to extremely unpleasant interactions as you might imagine. he was also obsessed with the character gibbs from ncis and tried to be him and would speak in lines from the show. bless his heart tho because i never got in trouble for constantly getting blackout drunk on the weekends and calling him to holler about weird process minutiae and also that ncis sucks

when i worked graveyard shift doing email support for a web host, the graveyard manager spent all night watching hardcore porn on his work machine with the speakers on (on the call floor) and encouraged the boys on his team to do the same. he would also leave every couple of hours to go to the motel across the street to gently caress for 10 mins and come back. he got promoted.

I got a new boss a few weeks ago and this dumb mother fucker is sending out emails with "high importance" about how we need to submit time sheets every day (was previously weekly), so i have him pegged as a moron rear end in a top hat right away. He responds to emails about projects where the issue was resolved in a subsequent email he was copied on, asking if it's resolved. You were copied on it!! Any time he gets involved with a project or meeting he derails everything for some stupid nonsense and wastes everyone's fuckin time. I hate this dumbass. Missing the couple months where there wasn't a head of the department. That was real nice

when i loaded trucks overnight at UPS my managers were always 19 year old kids who had been fast tracked into UPS's supervisor program (they do this because it allows them to pick off ambitious young people who might otherwise get involved in organizing the Teamsters Union). there was one guy who was always dipping and he'd spit it all over the floors of the truck you were loading.

once took an internship from a jack of all trades type of guy who hired in his whole immediate family to work on random projects that never really formed into a coherent business. for one summer he put his college aged son in charge as my boss, and told us to build a "make your own music" website because the son played acoustic guitar, and that seemed to be his only interest or personality trait.

anyways, we did manage to build a fairly lovely website, but what i remember the most about that summer was the guitar son being obsessed with the idea that he could rip off starbucks by exploiting a program that let him go back for unlimited black coffee refills for one day as long as he bought a special cup in the morning. i think one time i saw him drink 30 cups of coffee in a day and just become increasingly manic as he insisted he was beating starbucks at their own game.

i don't really know if that makes him a bad boss or not, but the memories i have of the dude getting blasted out of his brain on caffeine every day while he manically strummed his guitar in our hot little cheap office backroom will stick with me.

my job has a lot to do with dealing with idiot managers (im about to get one fired for really loving up an employee's pay badly)

my favorite bad manager story is about how this guy would go into his office and just sleep off his hangovers every day. which is based except that his employees had to pick up the slack for him

so one day his reports, sick of doing his job for him, ended up getting a photo of him totally passed out at his desk and sent it to hr. since this was in manufacturing meaning someone could be seriously injured due to his negligence, he was fired immediately

my boss refuses to organize anything via the internet like with Asana or Jira or what have you and keeps everything tracked in a paper planner instead. emails are also a joke.

a long time ago i used to work for a lovely web marketing/seo company, the boss of the company (owners friend) would smoke meth in his office, get into screaming fights with his girlfriend who was also the receptionist, make deals with small business where they would just give him stuff instead of paying, like one time he got these really expensive alligator boots in exchange for doing a bootmakers website, no money went to the company, another time he traded a website for extensive remodeling done to his house. then he got fired and a few days later he broke into the office and stole a bunch of computers and smashed up some more, i think he is still in prison. this was my first post college job and a great introduction to american working life.

at a different later job i had this boss who had horrible people management skills and everyone hated her. i didnt really have too many issues with her personally because i am a relaxed person but the vibes whenever she was in the office were just terrible, people got so on edge. she also would only do like an hour or two in the office before goig to "work from home" aka not doing any work at all or answering her phone. this was in a 24/7 environment so it was very dispiriting to be at the end of a 12 hour overnight shift and she's just clocking out to go home early. also sometimes she would randomly come to and stay late in the office which sucked because then we couldnt goof off and watch netflix or whatever until she left.

she got fired eventually not for creating massive turnover (seriously this was like a professional office job and it ws like being in a restaurant in terms of people coming and going) or being lazy and bad at the job but because she had created a supplier firm and was funneling company business to it lol.

My first boss was a chef at a bougie retirement community. He was notorious for flagrantly stealing stuff from the kitchen, like tableware and food.

He had been the head chef previously, and was fired for his theft. The next guy they hired also stole poo poo, so they fired him and re-hired the first guy.

Stealing from work is cool but that guy was a total rear end in a top hat and didn't do poo poo except steal from the kitchen.

Had a boss (also the owner’s friend) who got in trouble and fired for accidentally uploading nudes of the boss’ secretary to the shared drives, thus revealing there was an affair going on. Anyway, they were friends and so he was back two weeks later and then he started having an affair with a junior staff member on my team and doing all her work for her. Anyway, that got found out too because the junior staff left a notebook in the bathroom with “15 rules to date me” that were apparently plagiarized from 50 shades (never saw the notebook or that movie so cannot confirm) so he got fired again and a week or two later he was back but then right after he got back he got arrested for drunkenly grabbing a teenager’s rear end during a local street fair event. Fired for good that time

Then the junior got fired because he was doing all her work for her and she couldn’t do anything anymore (or at least that was the official line. Entirely possible it was to just clean house of people associated with him).

Then she sued for wrongful termination and got a pretty nice payout (unconfirmed rumor was $500k) so good for her

I got hired at a ceramics factory about 10 years back as a technician. Within the first week I noticed a huge problem in production and quality control. Immediately took it to my boss who shouted at me about how he was "self taught" in the field and didn't need anything I learned in school. I protested, as what we were making had to meet regulatory standards, plus it also had to meet basic functionality. He told me that the test I ran was wrong and he'd personally fire me if I ran them again, or brought this up elsewhere. I had just moved for that job, and took on debt to do so, so I privately documented what I tested, plus the results, and worked away for months. One of our main distributors figured out something was very wrong, and while we were trying to placate them we shipped the same product to another distributor, not mentioning the issues. Turned out people talked between those companies and poo poo got real fast. Facotry had to issue a recall that cost nearly 1/2 of annual income.
As soon as poo poo started going down I took my files and data to the owner with the largest stake, who also had been who hired me (there were three owners, 51%, 24.5%, and 24.5%). My direct boss, who was a minor owner, simultaneously tried to blame it all on me, claiming the problem only occurred once I started working. In my testing I found the problems dated back for years. I could never find any testing that had been done before me, but was told it had been done and came back good. Not sure if those were forged or if he just lied. It was a pretty intesne week. I showed that I solved this months ago, and that I was essentially intimidated into silence by my boss to protect his reputation. Accusations went back and forth. What saved me is I could show the problem persisted from before I was there, the final straw was that someone dug up emails from years ago from another distributor that had discovered the issue and we stopped working with them instead of fixing the problem. This was from before when the owner with the largest stake bought in. Weeks later it was revealed that my boss and the other minor owner were using company funds to pay their personal debts and issuing loans to themselves from the company. They ended up getting locked out and the big boss told them that he'd either buy them out or issue shares until their's were worthless and they'd only have a 1% stake. They played chicken and he did it, then he locked them out and had them barred from the premises. Not long after the sheriff's department showed up looking for them as they had taken government business loans fraudulently and used the funds themselves.

That was a wild way to start what was actually a great job. I got my boss's job, we turned the company around, the sole remaining owner was super chill. We'd have beer on fridays and all got regular and substantial raisies. Bad bosses fled the country and pretend they retired.

my worst boss was a ex-hollywood guy who just acted like he had a pool of secretaries to do everything for him wherher or not it was actually related to the job. So I had to do annoying poo poo like fax stuff to his lawyer, help him register for classes before the deadline (lmao come on), keep his Immunizations up to date. While also doing my actual job the rest of the time. He would also throw tantrums, like baby style smacking the desk because he couldn't make the PDF font look like what he wanted, or Outlook wouldn't refresh his inbox properly.

One time he called me in with a grave face and started going off on me because I hosed up his calendar. When in reality he had just imported some federal holiday calendar multiple times and he was pissed that thanksgiving was listed 6 times over in a coming week
