Totti was notably used that way by spalletti at Roma immediately prior, in a contemporary context. Spalletti may have been influenced too to try it by someone else at the time, but I'm not aware. But yes arguably the role, or a close analogue, existed since at least before WW2 in Hungary and Austria.
