On further listening, the Italian entry this year has grown on me. I still don’t get why Israel was so popular, though. Cha Cha Cha reminds me a little of Shum or Runaway—a song that didn’t win that year, but I listen to all the time.

It is honestly nuts how she was snubbed so hard by the juries, it was a very good vocal performance and seems, to my untrained ear at least, extremely technically proficient.

I had the finals playing in the car and without visuals, Tattoo *crushes* Cha Cha Cha for me. On the studio version he's heavily autotuned and I personally hate autotune. Agreed that Italy has grown on me, the guy is a legit great singer.

Tattoo is unfortunately the blandest, most forgettable song ever. I can't for my life remember any of the lyrics (not that I can make any sense of her whispers) or even the melody, just the nails and a trash compressor. Compare this to Euphoria, the chorus of which I can still recite from memory. Or Hard Rock Hallelujah, or Waterloo, or Fångad av en stormvind... it's a crime and the jurys must be made to pay.

Kojo, guy who was Finland’s 1982 contestant is to this day called Nolla-Kojo (Zero Kojo) and he was fairly popular but that Eurovision contest resulted in his career being in tatters. People took Eurovision really really seriously and many good artists often refused to participate as it was such a massive risk. At some point whole contest was considered a joke, until younger generations started to embrace the campy and cheesy side of it wholeheartedly.

I didn't even know that Swedish band Forbes had a song named 'Beatles' in 1977 and it placed last. It's weird that they went with Beatles nostalgy just seven years after the band broke and when John Lennon was still alive.
