Check your national broadcaster to see if they’re broadcasting it (if you’re in Europe, they almost certainly are). Otherwise, Eurovision will be streaming it themselves on YouTube! ...in some countries. You might need a VPN.

The pageantry is back! Normally we’d be in Ukraine, probably Kyiv, this year after Kalush Orchestra’s decisive victory but… well… *gestures vaguely at everything*. Since the United Kingdom came 2nd place in 2022 (WHAT?!) it’s being hosted in Liverpool on behalf of Ukraine this year for the 67th Eurovision Song Contest.

A total of 37 countries are taking part this year, after a handful of countries have dropped out due to ongoing financial woes and Russia being barred from the contest last year.

One major change has been made to the voting process this year. After years of complaints that the fun entries never get past the semi-finals, the juries no longer have a say until the grand final. In addition, countries who are not part of the contest can now make an online vote for their favourite song, being grouped together into a single “Rest of World” pool of points. Do it here and make sure something fun gets points!

Believe it or not, Eurovision is one of the world’s most watched non-sporting events, with hundreds of millions of global viewers every year. This is a huge international stage and provides a huge boost not only to the artists who are performing, but to the many countries whose music usually doesn’t get much traction outside of their borders.

Having started in 1956 this musical institution is known to basically everyone in Europe, even if they haven’t watched it in years. Each participating country submits a song and performer (often decided by a local vote-for-your-favourite televised contest) and they are pitted against each other on the world stage.

A mixture of juries and the general public vote together to decide what is the best song of the show, with the winning country usually hosting the contest the following year.

But we don’t care about all that. We just love it when people show up with bizarre staging, horse masks and enough pyrotechnics to fast-forward global warming by a decade.

Here's a playlist of the best and worst (actual best) of Eurovision over the years: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_Z_WldCQ2VzuSltsfCwV0Iavhhfo-0Qe

I've self-toxxed by putting £80 down on Sweden to win. I never usually bet more than a few quid for any particular thing but gently caress it, Sweden's winning.

Ireland's Eurovision act slams song contest in scathing post after failing to qualify posted:

In a now-deleted post, the Dublin-born singer shared his frustrations that Wild Youth didn't stand a chance at making it through to the final amid hopes that Ireland would finally be able to shine for the first time in five years.

"We did everything we could. But the truth is they never give Ireland a chance. Sorry if we let you down, we tried our best," the heartbroken singer penned in the now-deleted caption.

RTÉ’s head of Eurovision delegation says Ireland’s lacklustre showing down to ‘chronic underfunding’ posted:

The head of Ireland’s Eurovision delegation has described Ireland’s lacklustre track record in the song contest over the past decade as being akin to “a run-down train running on a poorly maintained track that is always late”.

UK goons, how do you feel about your chances for another 00? I liked James Newman - Embers more, the nul points was really undeserved, there were way worse songs.
I don't really fancy the odds for this poor girl who wrote a song.
Embers was just unbearably bland, which is worse than being terrible.

The hosting has been good enough where I think UK will get some points regardless of the song.

I've listened to the acts but not watched any of the semi finals as is tradition for me (i only watch the final). I've got tickets to the jury show tonight so I'm mega stoked.
In a very rare turn of events, everything fun from the semis got through. Normally you miss so much by skipping the semis.

Yeah that clip last night was rough. I can't see there being any REALLY low scorers this year, except maybe some of the big 5.
If Germany don’t have their best result in years I will be very disappointed.

I get we all wanted Finland to win but let’s not act like Loreen winning is another “Running Scared” from Azerbaijan.

I’ll jump on the gang tag train even if I think Finland wasn’t as hosed over by juries as others think - they were a close second after all which for the goon favourite is a huge upgrade.

I seriously need to remind everyone in here what a lovely winning song actually looks like.

Tattoo may not have been any of our personal pick but it was still a well performed and well written song with impeccable staging. It just wasn't "fun" in the way that we specifically watch Eurovision for.

This isn't plagiarism but it's a hilarious irony that part of Cha Cha Cha sounds a little bit like a Rammstein song called "Tattoo"

Imo, while there’s nothing in the rules against fielding a previous winner
Personally I think it's fine, but if it makes Irish fans shut the gently caress up about Johnny Logan then I'll take it.

Sweden double-loving Ireland on no longer being the only country with 7 wins and to have a twice-winning singer makes it all worth it and hopefully forces them to start caring again!

The staging was great, the chorus was immense, but I thought the verse was weak.
True about the verse, but not “last place” weak. No part of it was worse than the UK.
