Fatal Attraction is a 1987 horror thriller movie in which Michael Douglas cheats on Anne Archer with Glenn Close, who turns out to be a stalker who terrorizes their family. Eventually Douglas fesses up, Archer throws him in the doghouse, and then she blows Glenn Close away with a handgun. Moral: cheating is bad. It's a pretty cool movie! It made a gagillion dollars and got six oscar noms including best picture. And to this day it seems to inspire people to bring in their own baggage and express their sympathies for certain characters in sometimes telling ways, as if they see a little too much of themselves on screen in these characters and their lovely actions. some blog posted:Watching it now, Dan really comes off like a dirtbag, although that’s obviously not what the filmmakers intended. Obviously this movie in which a man literally fucks around and finds out was not trying to make him look like a dirtbag. Obviously! AVClub.com user "Billy Jennks" posted:Being a smug rear end in a top hat is absolutely nothing compared to being a domestic abuser and stalker. Suggesting he’s somehow at fault for her abuse is grim apologia for domestic violence and coercive control. OK sure but he's still an rear end in a top hat for cheating on his wife! ChristianAnswers.net posted:Also filled with profane language (even Dan’s six-year-old daughter has a foul mouth) Touche. AVClub.com user "destructive recovery" posted:Won't someone think of the children before having affairs, is the message of the movie. Single men have a right to screw up their lives, but fathers don't. How unfair!

I do like the original but I'm curious to see where they take the new one. I think giving the Glenn Close character more agency is probably better for a more nuanced story and Lizzy Caplan is good in everything. And Pacey's hair looks diabolical.

Pretty sure I saw this in the theater because we would go and watch movies to escape the summer heat. I saw a lot of (then new) ‘80s horror movies that way All I remember is the boiled bunny I should give this a watch again.

TheRinger.com posted:Famously, Paramount—or more specifically, its market research department, headed by tastemaker Joseph Farrell—insisted that Lyne change the film’s ending. The upshot of this meddling resulted in something that looked an awful lot like Friday the 13th. You know, people are free to prefer the unused alternate ending if they wish (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GY_NQK7rJrY), but this common idea that Fatal Attraction only retroactively became a tawdry horror movie thanks to the reshot ending is pretty silly I think. Throughout the movie Glenn Close is following him around and breaking into his home and killing his pet and kidnapping his kid, that feels less like it's heading toward "gonna kill myself in a way that makes you look responsible" and more "I'm a stab you and your wife mufucka" but that's just me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJ1tIGrCFLQ&t=35s

I'm surprised they didn't have a lot of people try more variations on the formula to try to mirror the success. Fatal Attractions: Set 10 years later, the plot is that everyone at one of those newfangled 'speed dating nights' at a local bar become totally instantly obsessed with everyone they met. Vinyl Attraction: A man gets a chance to have sex with a RealDoll while at a business convention, and decides it's just going to be a one-time thing. He soon finds himself stalked by her for the entire movie.

Everyone was doing some version of that. The Temp, Body of Evidence, Jade, Disclosure, etc. There was some sort of strange prestige going on and I can't figure it out. Maybe it was like how horror films were fairy tales, the sexy thriller was supposed to be the 'adult' version of that. Instead of kids going out and drinking and playing loud music, you're gonna get in trouble if you get into S&M or cheat on your wife. edit: God, these titles just ooze class... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_erotic_thriller_films

Most of what I know about Fatal Attraction is that it takes more force to kill the stalker than many literal horror movie monsters. Of course it pretty much just is a horror movie where the monster is 'a woman expressing sexual agency'.

Edit: And this leaving off any of the Basic Instinct-style erotic thrillers, this is all strictly Fatal Attraction model. SidneyIsTheKiller fucked around with this message at 06:33 on May 16, 2023 |

I'd pitch this as a christian-themed Fatal Attraction where a married man talks to an unmarried woman, alone, for 5 minutes and spends the rest of the movie terrified of how much that has threatened his faith and how interested she's gotten in continuing their conversation. The twist is that because he was so avoidant of her, she decided to just continue the conversation they were having (about Jesus) with a woman's church group, instead, and has been trying get in contact with him to thank him for introducing her to the gospels.

There was even a Fatal Attraction movie before Fatal Attraction! John Carpenter actually turned down directing Fatal Attraction in part because he thought the plot was too similar to Play Misty For Me (though it doesn't really have the cheating angle) from 1971: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Y9J7QjN1gg

Fatal Attraction was an experiment in using elements from good movies as a vehicle to deliver a brief and unflattering shot of a woman’s privates. It’s not an interesting thriller and it’s not sexy. But it was released in a time when watching porn was so difficult that guys would pay to sit in a movie theatre and jack off surrounded by other dudes so it makes sense that people at the time would think seeing an upskirt on a date with your wife is something edgy and Oscar worthy
