Welcome to the (new) miniatures and scenery painting Oath Thread! This is a place to make an 'Oath' to complete a miniatures painting project, typically monthly, however you can oath whatever start and end dates makes sense for your own project. Both miniatures projects and scenery projects (and the combination of the two) are welcome. Oaths are typically made for painting unfinished figures and scenery, however feel free to promise key renovations of painted figures, overhauls, whatever it is the work you want to do for the month. The purpose of this thread is to help motivate us painters and hobbyists who just require deadlines to get anything done, and also any discussion about whatever projects people are working on. This sounds different from the previous Oath threads... All of the contest elements and rules been retired in favor of this new (and much more relaxed) style of Oath thread, more about that later. What are the rules There are no rules. Ok then, what are the 'guidelines'
Monthly prompts are here to give you ideas for a project, especially when you are stuck (with maybe some figs you don't have a good opinion of, but still want to get painted). There will both be the following list of propmt ideas, but also a specific monthly prompt for each month, that might be one of the existing prompts, or maybe not! This will be random most of the time but may be topical by month (e.g. Halloween, winter, etc.) Here is the set from Season 13, which will be expanded on:
While we impose no rules on painting Oaths, we recommend a set of Traditions developed over years of oathing, as yet another source of motivation.
Links that might be useful when thinking about your projects: So... why the change from the previous style of Oathing? Over the last couple years attendance and judging dropped off, and for the die hard Oathers there was less and less interest in the competitive aspect. At the end of season 13 it was generally agreed that we wanted some kind of 'oath' thread, just a lot more relaxed (and ideally a lot less work to administrate), so this new style of Oath thread was proposed. The Oath threads have been great motivators and certainly kick started a new era of minis painting and scenery projects for me, and it's worth digging through the old threads and see all the great work that was done. So welcome to the (new relaxed style) Oath thread, and remember it's a Oath you make to yourself! [1] As there are no rules. gameraMan fucked around with this message at 21:42 on Aug 1, 2023 |

Lol I have no idea how to fix the thread title. Anyhow kicking off the new Oath season with a stumble with one week left in May, I'm gonna try to get a bit of painting done however feel free to start an Oath you plan to finish by end of June (or whenever)

I, gameraMan, Oath a bunch of creatures for May! In keeping with the new relaxed approach, I Oath to paint some of these creatures in the picture below (a mix of wizkids and reaper): I'll say more than 1 fig, and less than 20 :-) Oath is to finish *something* by end of May.

Oath ... Progress! So I really wanted to paint some little dudes, I chose these guys and got this far: However my eyes really suck and my one magnifying glass just isn't cutting it, gonna have to shop for something better and bigger if I'm gonna continue these dudes. So kicking these into next month! Thanks folks who joined in for this short month!

Start of June Oaths! Ok we did in fact start a new oath thread, albeit a bit late, but now let's start a whole new month of painting! For this month I shall declare Repair Time as a Prompt for the month and a new Prompt in general. For Repair Time, revisit something you were never quite happy with, or is in fact technically broken and requiring an actual repair. I certainly have more than enough Oath'd figs where I made the end of the month but was not necessarily happy with the result... Post a pic and explain the task in hand, whether it be an actual fix or just a rework of an old paint job. Let's see what we can improve!

I, gameraMan, oath to fix a thing and finish another thing! First I'm going to try and finish up my little demon dudes from last month, but also claiming Repair this month to finally motivate me to fix the broken hand on this LOTR statue of one side of the Argonath (I think this came with a DVD set):

Oath progress! Is what I'll proclaim this odd month, where I started some work on one coast, but had to spend a couple weeks on another coast (where I promptly bought some more paint so I could start up some new work) and so it's a bit of a hodgepodge. ANYhow... A couple really lousy last minute imps and quasits pics, taken last minute before leaving: Now this is the hand replacement that I didn't get a chance to actually paint properly, but it's pretty close to where I want it: Then when I got to the other coast I bought a bunch those Army Painter 'speed paints' to some mixed results (and here is the oath pic I forgot to actually post): With progress but also not quite complete wizard dudes (with terrible taste): Anyhow it's great seeing everyone else's work, especially stoked to see the 'Repair' theme trigger some interest (I kept not doing repair type work since it didn't into the 'oath structure', which was kind of anti-motivating...) Ok next month here we come!!

July Oathing! Sorry a bit late been traveling, glad to see some oaths already kicked off! Anyhow I dug through the last few years of monthly challenges and found a few that aren't in the current list, and more or less randomly have chosen for July... Maximum Carnage Include some gore or battle damage on your model. Maybe they won the fight or maybe they lost it, but either way something took some heavy damage! Or maybe all the damage/gore is part of the model's base. (I think for future months, I might literally roll dice to pick the monthly...)

Might instead try a brown wash across everything and then snakeman skintone and other details over the top. We'll see. So you're using the Army Painter speedpaints too? Yea I'm a little iffy on how they work, trying to decide if i prefer my usual '20 layers of paint' approach...

Oaths Complete! So I was going to extend my oath and could have sworn I took a pic, but I can't find it anywhere, maybe accidentally deleted... Anyhow I added in a Zombie Beholder (Wizkids I think) to my rock monster, which I'm just gonna include... A bit of Gore but not a ton: I did end up going in with the TAP speedpaints this time again (after dumping ~100 bux on the mega set I thought i'd better try), and actually was pretty happy with the results for the Beholder. Basically I used speedpaint for the basecoat, then layered with regular (older) TAP and Citadel paints, then used the speedpaint again for some washes, which actually was pretty happy with. I'll try some more speedpaint projects next month. Also included my wizards from last month in the pics, as I spent a bunch of time working on them throughout the month. gameraMan fucked around with this message at 22:31 on Jul 29, 2023 |

August Oaths! Thanks all who participated last month! After much (well a little) thought, I'm proposing a new theme... Cooling Off ! Include something 'cold' in your model, whether it be ice and snow, or perhaps just an overall 'cool' color scheme. I was gonna go with 'Scorching' this month but thought, heck people could use a break from the heat...

September Oathing! Thanks everyone for continuing to participate in the thread, love seeing everyone’s work lots of cool stuff (and variety!) This one for people like me who still have too many figs to paint…

October Oath! A couple of adventurers ready to go up against a spooky bone devil. Reaper and wizkids maybe...? Had been playing a lot of Darkest Dungeon, and when I found that plague doctor I decided to try and make that a sort of a theme. Certainly spooky enough... Also I decided I didn't really like the worldtimeserver site anymore as the background pic, back in the day it looked fine but then they hosed it up with adds and just broke the site. This time server site is a least a bit cleaner.

December Oathing! Ok so I think this month I'll suggest leaning one of two directions Tis the Season so play up the bright and snowy seasonal thing and or possibly Winter's Wolves go in on more of a cold and dark vibe, whatever that might mean in terms of fur or tone... Possible inspirational video for the latter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYCreOzCxP8 Ok maybe a not of wolves in that one but it has the tone I'm thinking of...

January Oathing! Just a bit late for the new year, and actually having failed to post my own oath progress because of end of year stuff (which I will still post soon...) Anyhow happy flipping new year, and with this new year we better be painting! Anyhow going to propose a tougher challenge, I say tougher since I can't do this well at all... Shine a Light Attempt to include Object Source Lighting (OSL) into your model, whether from a local light source such as a torch or lantern, or an external slight source out of the picture. (I seriously recommend reviewing some tutorials before attempting this...)

Some Recent Oaths Complete! Finally got in the right mood and finished up some languishing figures, from maybe 3 months ago a couple of dudes, a plague doctor: And a swordsman: Who was going to be my original OSL experiment, given the torch. But then I did some actual research and learned best gotta go all in OSL from the start and not try to patch on later (those attempts on this fig have been painted over, except just a bit of reflection of the torch on the sword). Next from December finished up my Tis the Season/Winter's Wolves Feel like this guy hits both parts of the theme, the snow and fur part, plus making him a bit of a Santa Troll figure And incomplete but progress made, bone devil from Nov and next OSL experiment Hag from Jan: Thanks folks for keeping the thread going! gameraMan fucked around with this message at 02:54 on Jan 31, 2024 |
