there was some yosposter who had an american cartoon dude as his avatar which i had an irrational hatred of (the avatar not the poster, who was also a bit annoying, they ate every meal on paper plates and claimed it was more environmentally friendly)

Paper is a renewable resource and takes little energy to make, and paper plates are easily composted. Like idk what the whole thing rolls out to but people have this allergy to using paper like the paper towels are made from old growth sequoias or something. They're made from pulp trees grown on tree farms, and while tree farms aren't as good as virgin forest they do provide a lot of places for critters to live in the 20-30 years in between logging cycles.

Interesting suggestion but I'm very skeptical, paper (including recycled paper?) requires a fair bit of water to produce and modern dishwashers are very water efficient. And ceramic plates etc do genuinely get a lot of uses before being trashed. Would be cool to see some higher effort research

Here they say they use 24 ton of water to produce a ton of recycled paper - I think paper plates are also generally plasticised slightly or waxed or something which might add some carbon/waste processing impact. It looks like a (euro) dishwasher uses about 7-15 liters of water per cycle, so being conservative you get 1600 cycles uses the same amount of water as 1 tonne of paper plates. I'll try and make them equivalent and look at carbon later, maybe
