How do you keep productive with dopamine on fleek at your engineering job hot cocoa on the clout? What does your project manager use to keep you from straying from the path?

Led through the mist, by the milk-light of moon, all that was lost is revealed.
I had to take a project management class for my LIS degree, and I think we learned about agile and waterfall. I can't for the life of me remember anything about them, though. Sorry, OP.

my previous project manager used gantt charts or some poo poo. then she asked me how much longer til design was done and i could procure every now and then. it was a small shop, about 35 people with 3 engineers.

my new job i'm the only engineer so i'll manage my own projects

It's bad. We're doing it and the only outcome is fatigue for everyone with no real gain other than being able to tell that to the board of directors.

Last I checked my MegaCorp has a mix of 85 scrum masters & agile coaches. Far as I can tell they just meet with each other & management all day. Not too bad when I can avoid them, occasionally have to nod at manager saying we’re no longer Kanban, we’re Kanban lite as I continue doing my job exactly the same.

unless you're the dorkiest of dorkass nerds people just load poo poo into a google sheet or shared drive .xlsx lol

every two weeks we have a meeting to go over the plan for the next two weeks. if it needs to be an ongoing thing then we just put it in jira and let the jira nerds figure it out. i don't work at a large company though (~2-300 people)

The actual principles behind the agile (iterative) development process are really simple and easy to understand.

The Agile Manifesto posted:

Principles behind the Agile Manifesto

We follow these principles:
Our highest priority is to satisfy the customer
through early and continuous delivery
of valuable software.

Welcome changing requirements, even late in
development. Agile processes harness change for
the customer's competitive advantage.

Deliver working software frequently, from a
couple of weeks to a couple of months, with a
preference to the shorter timescale.

Business people and developers must work
together daily throughout the project.

Build projects around motivated individuals.
Give them the environment and support they need,
and trust them to get the job done.

The most efficient and effective method of
conveying information to and within a development
team is face-to-face conversation.

Working software is the primary measure of progress.

Agile processes promote sustainable development.
The sponsors, developers, and users should be able
to maintain a constant pace indefinitely.

Continuous attention to technical excellence
and good design enhances agility.

Simplicity--the art of maximizing the amount
of work not done--is essential.

The best architectures, requirements, and designs
emerge from self-organizing teams.

At regular intervals, the team reflects on how
to become more effective, then tunes and adjusts
its behavior accordingly.

It's the companies who come in and dice everything into incomprehensible garbage and meningless rituals and process so they can charge for certifying agile coaches that don't understand that all that process is bullshit anyway that end up loving it all up

I stick with the legal speed and legal weed methodology. It’s the only one that works OP. Everything else is jerk-off fantasies for middle managers and other such parasites.

Whenever they try to institutionalize me I create a diversion by asking the smelliest engineers in the room if they prefer org-mode or taskpaper. Then I sneak out back and smoke more weed. I get a whole lot done this way and my reviews are always good.
