FullLeatherJacket posted:

honestly: if we got a back CB, a couple of midfielders, and a quality striker, I don't think keeping De Gea #1 for next season would be the worst outcome in the world

people have gotten in their heads that he's some kind of flailing Roy Carroll idiot who needs to make a saving throw against Fear Of Airborne Balls every time the opposition have a shot (because they keep seeing that Roy Keane doesn't rate him), but that's never really been true

his problem is that he's about thirty years out of date - he'll make a couple of saves each season that I don't think any other keeper is getting a glove to, but he just can't do the sweeper keeper thing that modern fancy football tactics requires

he's not the future, and needs to be replaced sooner rather than later, but United's big issue is ultimately not that their catchman caught less balls than the other teams' catchmen this season

The problem is that the entire team has to play in a different way to compensate for him, and it's holding back any attempt to build a modern team.

And he's also made several absolute loving howlers so even "he's good at stopping shots" is wearing thin.

don't you see, midfielders are the moneyball player. you just stack enough of them onto the pitch and then you win.

hello Pep

although these days it's all about centre backs apparently. Tony Pulis was ahead of his time.

United back in for Mason Mount at £55M

I've never really *got* him as a player, is he good? Southgate seems to rate him and he's won Chelsea POTY twice so I suppose yes.

Eriksen cover/upgrade/replacement presumably.

I was about to say "ah-hah what about Mason Mount" but I guess he was too young to be part of the last Chelsea win, which was longer ago than I remembered.

Maybe we'll get Jamie Vardy in.

For real though it's a weird transfer, yeah he'll probably win the Bundesliga a few times but I don't think it'll enhance his rep in this country particularly, might as well go to PSG.

Anyway, Chelsea fans will be up in arms when their players wind up spending everlong on the mend when they're trying to breakout of midtable mediocrity. Monkey wrench.
