The part of the promotional video where the guy is sitting in an empty room reliving a time when his family there is almost unfathomably bleak.

to make a recording of that you have to record while wearing the thing.
so i guess youre like walking around your kids birthday party with that strapped to your face the whole time recording "the memories".

Are iPads even useful in any context other than an easy way to have somebody to sign a waiver at a paintball field and getting a toddler to shut the gently caress up?

They've actually changed a lot about how people use computers and in certain fields have replaced laptops and handheld computers just about entirely.

Ironically, for all the end user focused uix bullshit the iPad is largely a work device for many people, I don't know what percentage of their sales this accounts for but I would imagine it's quite a lot. They have been ubiquitous at every shop I've done support for since the things launched.

The biggest users are sales people and field technicians, ipads in ruggedized cases are surprisingly tough and have eaten a lot of the market share of computers like the toughbook

apparently the availability is so far out because manufacturing has been an insanely difficult challenge due to the fragile curved laminated glass and the way it all has to be fitted together because of the aesthetic design. the curved circuit boards are apparently tough as well but it’s the ridiculous external facing glass panel display that’s really loving things up

when they dump the stupid bullshit design and put the tech in something less stupid looking at half the price it’ll take off as a replacement to ipads for content consumption

my partner got super excited over buying an ipad during the pandemic and i was like "are you sure your gunna use it?" "oh yes definitely! its gunna replace all my devices". so she got one and then used it like 3x total in 3 years and it's just been collecting dust since

i've recently repurposed it for work by installing Pix4D Mapper so i can do photogrammetic 3d models with it in the field since it's got a lidar scanner on the camera but lol it sucks otherwise.

so yeah having people sign waivers and getting toddlers to be quiet. ios tablets are loving terrible devices

How accurate are they as lidar scanners?

seems accurate for my purposes. you could try the free 14-day demo of pix4dcatch https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pix4dcatch/id1511483044?ls=1 if you want to. probably at least within an couple of inches. paper on my typical use cases using iphone 12 pro, so +/- 4 inches https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-01763-9

e: i'm not gunna share my work projects but I can confirm I've basically replicated this type of demo many times with an ipad with pretty drat good measurements. https://cloud.pix4d.com/dataset/1066298/model?shareToken=c89dd28e-1e23-4167-9c22-deb9e96beada

That's pretty cool. Not quite the right scale/accuracy for my application but it's very impressive what consumer grade electronics are getting to be capable of.
