It seems like all the subs have gone private. Any google searches that lead there are useless now. Anyone know what is going on?

It’s apparently related to this, op: I am the Eschaton; I am not your God. I am descended from you, and exist in your future. Thou shalt not violate causality within my historic light cone. Or else.

Can’t reddit just like…make them all public again and ban all the mods?

Sophy Wackles posted:Can’t reddit just like…make them all public again and ban all the mods? probably but that's not a great look when you're whoring for an IPO, they'll probably do some kind of bullshit "we hear you" blah blah blah, and after the heat dies down liquidate everyone involved with the blackout. or, judging by spez's statements so far, it's not out of the question that reddit staff just posts a bunch of middle fingers and tells the users to go take a flying gently caress at a rolling donut because they got dollar signs being thrown at them by the dump truck

Short version: Reddit has always allowed use of their API for free, which meant anybody could make third party apps to browse Reddit, do mod tasks, etc. This was mostly a nice thing they did, but it also helped them a bit because their official app is awful and the third party apps helped close some gaps. About 2 months ago they announced that changes were coming and API users would have to pay. This makes sense; they’re losing out on ad revenue from third party app users and it does take money to use the site. They didn’t say how much it would cost. A few weeks ago they announced the prices and they are high, and go into effect July 1. Like, a third party app (apollo) would have to pay $20-30M a year high. So it is more or less a ban on third party browsing apps (some mod tool apps are not impacted). In the aftermath Reddit doubled down on it, insulted and made false accusations about the Apollo dev, whined when he put out transcripts of the tapes of their calls showing they’d lied, and is barreling forward. To protest this, a lot of subs (including most of the largest ones) are going private for 2 days. Some claim to be going private permanently because the mods only use third party browsing apps and don't plan to use anything else. I don’t really see it doing anything.

And of course QuornHub for all the vegans. Obligatory "reddit has gone way downhill" comment. I'm pretty sure everyone here has been hearing it for upwards of a decade, so I'm not sure it matters anymore but I've noticed it's getting harder to fight through all the bots these days. Toxic Mental posted:Who the gently caress uses an app to browse specific websites instead of just safari/chrome which is basically a replication of the desktop browser According to various Reddit posts recently: Blind and vision-impaired people use various apps with screenreading capabilities, etc. Those apps will no longer be available, and the official Reddit app is crap for accessibility. Also, with the new rules, the remaining 3rd party apps won't be able to access any NSFW content. So, for example, a mod who uses an app won't be able to see or ban a user who spams people with dick pics.
