Marginalia Search is an independent DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and attempts to show you sites you perhaps weren't aware of in favor of the sort of sites you probably already knew existed.

Where this search engine really shines is finding small, old and obscure websites about some given topic, perhaps old video games, a mystery, theology, the occult, knitting, computer science, or art.

does frinkiac.com count as "indie"? i use it a lot. if you aren't aware, it lets you search simpsons episode scripts and find images from the episodes, make gifs, etc

http://michaelyingling.com/random/calvin_and_hobbes/ is a similar thing for calvin & hobbes but just for helping you find specific comics. it requires exact phrasing so you're better off going with fewer words eg "tyrannosaurs" instead of "tyrannosaurs f-14". Also weirdly some of the scripts do not match the comics correctly but the descriptions seem to be correct so scan the descriptions when you're trying to find a specific comic in the results.
