Sydin posted:Yeah reading between the lines it definitely sounds like the sub imploded well before any search efforts were underway, probably around the time contact was first lost on Sunday. contact was lost because the sub imploded and everyone died

GreenBuckanneer posted:I think in the future deep sea dives need to be designed like our space ships: docking ports, another, sister ship can attach to, and a means of going down there yourself instead of having to wait for the coast guard to putt putt at a measly 29mph (25 knots, which is fast by boat standards but slow as poo poo by emergency standards. I wish more boats traveled at 50 knots instead) the time between the first sign of a problem and the immediate death of the entire crew was most likely measured in milliseconds the lesson to be learned here is "don't completely ignore the depth rating of your submarine"

Gomez Chamberlain posted:No actually the future is loving hilarious and you know it. People clowning on billionaire misfortune so hard a near-30-year-old song charts again. it's stupid that the only thing challenging the ruling class of obscenely wealthy billionaires is their own total idiocy, but it's also funny when it happens and some guy with enough money to do literally anything he wants decides to ride a glorified thermos to the bottom of the ocean and get predictably disintegrated by the uncaring forces of the natural world

Vegetable posted:What were the final moments of the sub people? Now that we know how they died, do we know if they might have seen it happening or was it more likely instantaneous? apparently it had a hull failure alarm which probably didn't work since that engineer they fired said that in testing it usually didn't actually go off until a few milliseconds before the hull actually failed

Like I get that it's a very concise explanation of how an implosion would kill someone so fast they'd never even notice it, but maybe just copy and paraphrase it like you're copying someone's homework? i'm pretty sure most people don't know who the gently caress he is, i certainly don't, and they simply linked to it without knowing that he sucked

Earwicker posted:just because the thing imploded two hours into the trip doesnt mean - if that hadnt happened - that the video game controller couldnt have caused some other, even stupider accident further down the line. they just didnt get a chance for that particular set of fuckups to occur. i had to listen to james cameron talk about himself and how great he was for 2 minutes before he got to the point but in that interview about this he does say something along the lines of "yeah the hull is by far the most important part and we spent 3 years just modeling ours in a computer before we even started trying to build it" which makes perfect sense because any other malfunction is at least theoretically possible to recover from. if the hull fails you die before you even know it happened

CEO has his company build shoddy, corner-cutting, dangerous product to be used by gullible customers, like usual, but forgets the part where he's not supposed to use the product himself that or it was the standard performative "Look, everyone, I'm so sure that it's perfectly safe that I'll even use it myself(once, and then never again)" except that this one was so unsafe that even one time was too much
