The six month count down to nothing is so hilarious to me. First of all, if Garfield is in danger, why wouldn't you "save him" right away. Why give his cruel and perverted masters HALF A YEAR to damage the ip, or directly cover Garfield in gak #cumshots? Secondly, in six months Nathan won't even remember this was a thing. This is the Google review lawsuit thing again. Thirdly, even IF a "hostile takeover" of licensing rights was a real and possible thing: Nathan wouldn't have the capital do it. Even if he was in good terms with Sony, he can't buy licensing rights anymore- and presumably, a forced acquisition would be more expensive. Maybe go back to trying to pass the world's smallest cereal box as art.

I can kind of respect Jim Davis in a way, for creating something just designed for making money via comic strips. I actually found an old book someone gave me in ~1997, a pocket Garfield book called "Have you booted your computer today?", where each pair of pages contains some text, and a bit of Garfield art to go with it,. Not even a comic, just a series of disjointed "jokes". The first page got me thinking - someone was credited with all the writing, and it wasn't Jim Davis. The artwork was literally drawn by "PAWS Inc", not any one person. The cover and spine of the book proudly proclaimed at the book was "By Jim Davis". He's like some kind of licensing genius, like how every drawing of The Simpsons has "Matt Groening" written on it. But what I really meant to say was I definitely don't think Garfield would be safe with Nathen.

As far as I can tell from the little I know about him Jim Davis seems fine. Tried to do a comic he really liked before Garfield, struggled with it a while and it didn't take off, then just went hell with it, might as well do something just really commercial then and found success. No less ethical than getting a soulless corporate job or whatever -probably quite a bit more than most- and a lot better paid, so good for him.
