https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDZm80V1Swg lmao honestly everything about skullgirls is perplexing to me. why is it even getting updates in the year of our lord 2023? It came out in 2011, shouldn't they have made Skullgirls 4: Alpha Turbo Edition by now if they were a competent fighting game company?

Mr Hootington posted:The loot management is half the fun of a good extraction shooter. Ehhh, I don't wanna be doing STALKER Gamma levels of inventory management during a PVP game, but I do like the idea of grabbing a bunch of stuff and trying to protect the swag I collected from other players. Speaking of GAMMA, beat the main storyline. Had a decent time overall, but I'm still not sure what was accomplished by them going all in on making it so you have to scavenge parts to fix up weapons when you still need purchased weapon kits from vendors to do it, especially when those kits are gated behind your ability to find the randomly generated tool kits. At least artifacts were somewhat useful now.

They drop but I dislike the RNG of that. They also need to have the tool kits to build, and I had the worst luck in getting enough basic tool kits to spawn to use to make the advanced tool kit, and god help me it took FOREVER to get the expert kit (needed to make exoskeleton stuff and any of the fun guns like the RAPTOR or the SCAR). Also why do they make you pay for allied technicians anyways, never made sense to me in Anomaly or this.

PantsandCola posted:Should I get Fear and Hunger?? The first one is rough around the edges; I'd really only recommend it to Berserk fans (the game's biggest inspiration, by far) and people really into the Call of Cthulhu RPGs. On the one hand, you have a genuinely interesting set of mechanics that forces you to lean into your class's abilities and fight dirty in the same way that Call of Cthulhu/Delta Green requires you handle the various eldritch creatures in those RPGs, as well as a very tense and oppressive atmosphere that matches other great horror games like Alien: Isolation and Silent Hill 2. On the other, the first game has the same problem Berserk has in regards to depictions of sexual violence, in that its often tasteless and gauche. I can recommend the second game with a lot less reservations; the sex stuff is toned down and never crosses the line into being outright poo poo like the first game does, it keeps the same gameplay as the first with less RNG bullshit, and its honestly incredible how different the way you play can be depending on your starting character; certain characters can navigate different parts of the map with more ease than others because they can lockpick or hack electronically locked doors, some start off with an inability to use guns but powerful magic to compensate, and there's one character who is a disabled botanist in a wheelchair (which gives her a lot of disadvantages in combat, but she can use common herbs to craft poisons that do ludicrous amounts of damage).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bedleWtFIJ8 Interesting video that shows that Fallout 1 and 2 really aren't big on choices and consequences in the way modern RPGs think of them; as the guy making this says, in Fallout 2 there are correct choices (doing the good thing and getting good rewards and XP for it) and contrarian rear end in a top hat choices (sabotaging everyone for the love of the game).

Tankbuster posted:people who jerk off over fallout 1 and 2 haven't played the games my guy. They play New Vegas, hear its like the old fallout games and then project that backwards into the interplay fallout games. Todd howard's biggest crime was resurrecting that franchise so now you get to be inundated with annoying people who got strongarmed into voting for joe think they are revolutionaries for choosing the Yes Man ending. I think a lot about the people that allege that Fallout 1 and 2 are these big anti-capitalist games when trying to own right-wing people online ("Hah! You say you hate politics in gaming, but you like Fallout, a left-wing political game?"). I don't really think there's much to that kind of thinking. Fallout 1 either has you deal with these small holdings whose politics stops and ends at "don't die to raiders or mutant wildlife", or presents places where capitalism is reemerging (like the Hub) as a good thing. Fallout 2 likewise presents the NCR, which is explicitly modeled after the pre-war USA's form of government and free market economy, as a force of good in the wasteland. While both games do show the old US government doing bad things (Fallout 1 opens with US soldiers murdering a Canadian rebel and then waving to the camera, and Fallout 2 has everything to do with the Enclave), it's presented in the very liberal way of "you just need good people like Tandi instead of bad people like President Richardson, and things will be good".

Tankbuster posted:its anticapitalist in the epic gen-x "I don't even care way" which means not at all. Fallout 2 also has the 90s equivalent of memespeak and incessant pop culture references. New Vegas' big opposing factions are a somewhat corrupt miniature USA and a bunch of literal football rapists and slavers. I really blame hbomberguy's video essay on fallout 3 for this current outbreak though. I do think that Fallout: New Vegas definitely is the better RPG of the 3D Fallouts, but yeah, it is weird how people have turned it into this rose emoji banner when there's no actual anti-capitalism in it either. Its fine to like things that aren't purely socialist, so I don't know why people need to do mental jujitsu to say that going down the Yes Man route means the Courier will implement socialism in the Mojave, rather than things being run by the gleefully capitalist ex-tribals that House brought in to run the casinos.

You side with the institute and it requires you to kill both the brotherhood and the railroad. Then their post game content is you doing the same poo poo while gamers cried about bethesda not giving agency to the players. No, you chose to side with the reclusive and imperialist faction and now have to enforce their code. Yes Man is truly the coward's path and honestly I don't know why more people don't give it poo poo for how weird it is that they gave people a way to completely side-step having to interact with the politics of the Mojave.

I’m enjoying Jagged Alliance 3, although the UI is really confusing to me as I have not touched a single one of these games. also enjoying heavily modded Fallout 4. Unemployed life sucks and I hope I get a job soon, but there is something to being able to have time for all my hobbies.

Tankbuster posted:what modlist? My own. Core is Lunar Fallout, since I think it hits the sweet spot of making things challenging enough that you play like your life actually matters; I tried Horizon and that is far too finicky for my tastes since it makes you jump through twenty hoops to get basic gameplay functions like "making medicine" or "being able to make actual food that won't give you Super Tapeworms", but otherwise, the only modlist I used was The Midnight Ride up until it started suggested gameplay overhauls.

There's a lot of media like this that's like depression tourism (Last of Us comes to mind). I remember loving that kind of stuff when I was way younger and thinking it was "more real" or something, more honest about life, but now that I've lived with my own and my wife's depression it's just incomprehensible to me to ever want to experience anything that purposefully brings you down. I dunno, I want to die basically every other day and I didn't feel bad about playing TLOU or LISA at all.

I don't recall the first TLOU having a message about how killing is bad. Joel murdering some innocent doctors is portrayed as bad but the game doesn't exactly expect you to break down crying because you shot a bandit or the creepy cannibal guys. Honestly, I'm not even sure why people interpret TLOU 2 as judging them for killing all the time either; it's not like its doing the goofy Spec Ops thing and going "you could've dropped the controller and NOT killed these people".

I'm glad that Disco Elysium proved definitively that you don't need combat to have a fun RPG, since it feels like the vast majority of CRPGs tack on combat out of rote obligation and its the worst poo poo I've ever seen. I tried to play Age of Decadence as an assassin character and oh my god, the amount of forced combat encounters you get into where you do the most boring turn-based combat possible. I had to give up and just play a route where I never had to do combat to get away from it all.
