I went down a tiny rabbit hole of videos made by Jim Blashfield. Not a really well known name, but his video effects he popularized basically created what we would now associate with the mid 80s aesthetic. It's that combination of compositing and early digital tech.

The best example, IMO is ''I Can't Wait' by Nu Shooz, which seems to be in some sort of modern resurgence in popularity.

Then the dude came back in the mid 2000s to do a video for Weird all, called Pancreas which is something of a Beach Boys parody... That's what he came out of retirement for.
