The Wire
Pros:
- I can finally say I watched the wire
- I think Idris Elba is in a season of this?

Cons:
- I’ve heard the quality swings wildly from season to season a la true detective, which is a shame.
- I know this show will bum me out one way or another.

Pros:
-Idris is in 3 seasons, which is 3/5

Cons:
-BS, the first four are all brilliant, and the last one is still good, just not as good, wraps it up well at least
-yes..... but not like you might expect? The Wire is not miseryporn, I never found it nihilistic, it's cynical as poo poo, but not nihilistic. It's a very human show. It asks you to give a gently caress about people. Not the opposite. It's also funny as gently caress when it wants to be, which too many of the people who hype it never ever mention. Both in smart ways and in plain wonderful slapstick ways.

best way i can put it is the finale of the whole show will give you things that crush your soul, right next to stuff that makes you cry tears of joy.

I was honestly thrown by the lack of computers more than anything. The “we don’t have enough heart for two wars” line was pretty clever. Christ I was 11 in 2002, we still used beepers that late in the game?

I’m going to at least give it a season and then go from there

And yeah Grape is right, there are parts of The Wire that genuinely did make me cry happy tears. There are also parts that left me a sobbing mess but them's the breaks, and also I cry at everything on TV so take that with a grain of salt anyway.

Idris Elba is so good in it too, yes, but also so is basically everyone, it's got a great cast.

The show isn't that old but its weirdly anachronistic. Cell phones, even the ubiquitous :airquote: burner :airquote: were wildly prevalent when this show came out.

Number one reason I don't trust Season 2 haters is they both come across like they don't get what the show is about (the whole picture), and also that they seem to be in it for a weird vaguely problematic fetishization of kool black street punks doing crimes. Rather than I guess the great writing and acting.

Like all I hear is "oh now the criminals are ethnic white dudes??? boringggg".

Seinfeld gets great in its later seasons once they realize the show's strength is playing an increasingly cartoonish supporting cast off the main characters. Elaine's inconsiderate nature works best opposite eccentric characters like Puddy or Peterman.

yeah, the weirdness of the last season's main story is offset by the legendary gut punch of how it wraps up its world in the finale. i kinda want to watch it all again now just so i can cry about it one more time

yeah exactly, i got the same feeling, like it was mostly david simon kind of using his new influence to get back at his old bosses, which, fair enough, like i said it wasn't bad, but its really not in the same realm as season 4 or the prior seasons. that shot of carver getting back into his car and beating his steering wheel in frustration is like one of the most powerful scenes ive ever seen on tv

100%, especially as he did everything he could think of to help Randy including trying to adopt him himself when he’s desperate. I think Carver was a product of a group home like that so he knows the nice kid will he eaten alive especially as he was labeled a snitch… and he is. Then when we see Randy later he’s very gone and likely won’t live to see 30.

Definitely deliberate how Namond, who had comparatively the best home life & resources at the start is the only one to get out and thrive, as his more desperate peers are doomed.

Murder She Wrote is great because you get to see a lot of Golden Age of Hollywood actors pop up in special guest star roles. There are quite a few not-yet-famous actors in it as guests as well. Also, Jessica Fletcher has a twin cousin (?) who's British, and shows up in more than one, I believe.

It's also very funny to see the docks in Cabot Cove, because any kid who went on the Jaws ride at Universal Studios Hollywood can tell it's the very same set.

Usually the wilder, more cameo-heavy EPs are ones where she travels outside of Cabot Cove.

In summation, it's like a nice bowl of oatmeal on a cold morning, and school has been cancelled for snow.

What ever happened to Oz? Nobody ever talks about it or rewatches it. Was it bad? How did O'Reilly and shillinger end up as insurance rivals? Why doesn't adebisi's hat ever fall off?

The first two seasons I think hold up. Beyond that the show really goes all over the place and gets pretty stupid. As an example, in the first season there is a major arc that basically revolves around a single murder committed in the prison and the extensive FBI investigation therein. By the later seasons, people are getting killed every single episode with barely a comment.

Its funny because when I was in college I'd get the Oz DVDs in the mail from netflix and my roommate and I would binge through the whole disc in a day or two. I loved it back then.

The Wire, Six Feet Under, and The Sopranos all hold up though.

My mom & uncle absolutely loved Oz, and I was curious about it myself but of course I wasn't allowed to watch it while it was on while I was 10-16 years old.

Either one of them would probably call it a masterpiece, but I watched it after my mom suggested it & ended up getting turned off by the structure of the show. 10-16 year old me would have been stoked about all the nudity though.

It's a super super good rewatch, like when you know that say Character X is going to end up being a cool competent dude by the end, and than watching season 1 again when they're an abusive moron is just made more fascinating for that fact.

Maybe because McNulty is a little cutie pie? Perhaps. Will I end up eating those words? Likely.

Also! Wow! gently caress the dialogue and writing is REALLY good. The chicken nugget scene especially, the depth of “you’re still in the basement making fries while Ronald McDonald is enjoying the wealth despite the McNugget being your idea” is done in a way that’s disgustingly true in 2023 and is hitting me quite personally.

one of the main writers on the wire is richard price, the author of lush life, clockers, bloodbrothers, and a bunch of other novels, his ear for dialogue is incredible. i mean david simon, the creator, is also a great writer but more of a journalist, i think price is responsible for a lot of the humor and the overall cadence of the show.
