With the way the modern hockey cap works you pretty much have to be contending or burning things down to the ground. It’s the NFL hard cap but with guaranteed contracts and not much in the way of cap tricks.

Basketball might work better but any team that’s tried the “two timelines” idea inevitably seems to get hosed by selecting prospects based on perceived need and fit not just the best guy available (James Wiseman, the guy the Warriors picked using this retooling idea, is currently still looking lost during his minor league summer games)

Probably more applicable to baseball where instead of just trying to get the best prospects possible a short sighted owner might try to get some guys for next year
