It is a little hard to square negotiations by the end of the year with "we will try Russians for warcrimes" but NATO doesn't really have to make sense any more.

same. not quite sure what to make of the seemingly contradictory intention. Possibly that warcrime trial being one of the goals that is only being floated to widen the gap between what NATO "wants" and what is achievable as a way to make it easier to get people on board for a negotiated settlement.

i'm not a nato understander at all but like nato is saying: they want UA to join, they're not going to negotiate a peace deal with Russia (at least not until the end of the war?) and they're not going to let UA join until the war is over. but like isn't the whole point of the war that Putin doesn't want anymore nato countries at Russias borders? so like what possible reason is there for Russia to sit down at peace talks if they're not getting the 1 thing they wanted. seems like the best thing from their view is regime change in UA

almost like the whole point of the war is to sacrifice ukraine in some harebrained attempt to bloody the russians
